cant display custom fields in editor

  I’m trying to add a custom field to a post in the editor but when I select the checkbox under options > Advanced Panels > Custom Fields in the post editor the page just refreshes and I can’t see any new panel for adding custom fields.

  any help would be greatly appreciated,

  (i saw some posts in the forums mentioning “advanced custom fields plugin” while trying to find an answer to my issue but as far as i can tell i should be able to add custom fields to posts without the need for a plugin)

  for context, im trying to create a post which has an extra piece of information associated with it (specifically a “duration/time taken”) this way just as the featured image and excerpt is displayed for the posts when they are displayed on the homepage, it could also show the “duration” while also showing it at the bottom of that post
