cant display custom fields in post editor

I’m trying to add a custom field to a post in the editor but when I select the checkbox under options > Advanced Panels > Custom Fields in the post editor the page just refreshes and I can’t see any panel for adding custom fields.

the custom field i want to add is not included in the theme im currently using yet but in essence i want to associate some extra information with a post so that it can be displayed in different places on the page depending where the posts are shown (similar to how the featured image is associated with a post so it can be displayed in different ways depending where in the theme it is shown)

i am planning on upgrading to the business plan and creating my own custom theme which would need to use these custom fields but i saw some old posts from 2012 and 2016 mentioning that custom fields were not supported in wordpress.com and needed to confirm that i can use them before committing to anything

    many thanks for your help,

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

another thing, this custom field (or custom metadata) would need to be accessible through the wordpress rest api

Custom fields are not possible with WordPress.com. They are set for self-hosted WordPress.org sites only.
