Can't download/install plugins

  • Unknown's avatar

So I just recently purchased two plans and two domain names from wordpress. I’ve been trying to work on the sites, but I can’t add plugins. It seems to me that other web users don’t normally buy the plans and have no problem downloading plugins and etc. I don’t really understand the FTP thing or why I can’t seem to download/ install plugins. Please help me.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello,
There are two different kinds of WordPress. One version is running here on WordPress.com where all the tech stuff is handled for you. The upside is they make it as easy as possible to set up and begin blogging. The downside is there are restrictions on what you can do. For example you can’t install plugins or FTP. That’s why you don’t see those options.

With the other WordPress you have complete freedom to do whatever you want with your site. That’s likely what the other web users you mentioned are using. It’s a bit more work to set up because you have to register a domain, buy hosting, install plugins and so on. Here’s more info about the free software from WordPress.org: https://wordpress.org/

    Hey Micawbr,

So is there any way I could still use the other version? Did I waste my money? Could I get a refund? How do I get the more customizable/ “freer” version?

    Hey Jessica,

So is there any way I could still use the other version?

Yes. Here’s the guide for that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/

You can skip the steps that don’t apply such as exporting/importing content.

    Could I get a refund?

    Yes. Here’s how: https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/

If your purchase included custom domains (without “wordpress.com” in the name) and you want to take those with you, add “modlook” to the tags in this thread. That will flag this for a staff member to assist you.
