Can't edit menu items

  • Unknown's avatar

I previously successfully added a link to my nav bar for my “About Dorothy” page and now want to add another page with a link in the nav bar called “Gallery of Art.” But when I go to the Edit Menus area under Appearance, the Pages tab at the left opens with the message “No items.” According to the support instructions, this area is supposed to have various options for me to create my new menu item. How do I get the options to appear? (My blog is not published yet so I don’t think you’ll be able to view it).

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Create page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
Add page to custom menu > http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-pages

Among the most common misconceptions is that bloggers fail to understand is
    (1) there is only one page we can post to in any blog and
    (2) the static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ they create do not automatically update.

Only the dynamic pages like Categories, Tags and Archives created by the software when we publish a post we that we have assigned Categories and Tags too will update automatically update with posts.

By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

The options are fine. No items means you haven’t created any pages, or the pages you created are currently drafts or private.

Thank you for all the information, Timethief. I understand the difference between pages and posts. That’s why I made my About Dorothy page, a static page that will not change. It is different from my Home page where each new post will appear. Justpi – my About Dorothy page is still in draft form, and I was able to create a menu item for it.

What I would like to be able to do is create a new static page called Gallery of Art, with a link in the nav or menu bar, which people could click on to look at a selection of my art work. But now I am wondering if this won’t work as I would also like to be able to update the page with new art as I create it. So that would make it non-static, right? I am seriously thinking of just creating a new website of artwork and putting the link to the website in my nav bar. I already link two other of my websites there (yes, I probably have too many things on the go!) :-)

Justpi – my About Dorothy page is still in draft form, and I was able to create a menu item for it.

So? Your original question was why you’re seeing “No items” in the Pages module, and that’s what I replied to: this happens when you don’t have any pages that are both published and public. Drafts and private pages don’t show in the Pages module. Your “About Dorothy” page was added to the menu first then turned to draft.

What I would like to be able to do is create a new static page called Gallery of Art, with a link in the nav or menu bar

To do this, you create the page in Pages > Add New, publish it, then you go to Appearance > Menus, select the newly published page in the Pages module, click Add to Menu, click Save Menu.

But now I am wondering if this won’t work as I would also like to be able to update the page with new art as I create it. So that would make it non-static, right?

Depends on what you mean by “update”. Update as in, say, add new paragraphs in the content, or update by creating new pages or posts, each one with its own URL?

Thanks, Justpi for the “aha” moment – I’ve now got my page and my link!

By update, I mean add new content to the Gallery of Art page, not new pages or sub pages. By new content, I mean new images with descriptions and info on how to acquire. I don’t want the images or info to be generated by blog posts but to be added and edited as I choose. Is this possible?

    You’re welcome.
Of course it’s possible to add more content to an already published static page. You just go to Pages > All Pages, click Edit under the page title, enter the new content, click Update.
If the content becomes too long, you can even split it into a series of numbered pages:
