Can’t edit Widget

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’m having issues with a widget on my site. When I go to the “Design” panel and click on “Widgets”, the Available Widgets are listed on the left side, and the Current Widgets are listed on the right side. When I click on the edit link for the Widget in question, a cropped edit window appears that doesn’t allow me to see the left hand side of the text box. It looks like it cut off half of the text box (doesn’t show beyond the frame of the Available Widgets column, to the left). I added text and clicked on the “save” button at the bottom of the frame, but it will not save any changes. I assume the actual button to click to save changes is in the cropped area of the text box.

This only seems to be happening on the “text” widget types, as this cropped effect is occurring for all other text widgets on my admin panel.

Website is snerkology.wordpress.com. Widget in question is “Participating At” on the left hand (“main”) sidebar.

    Thanks,

    Laura

Bumping this, since no reply from tech support…

Never mind, had to download Firefox as others here have noted.

I’m having the same problems…is Firefox the answer?

For this problem, yes Firefox is the answer. Hopefully staff will get the IE problem ironed out, but no one know when.

    Using WXP, IE6

I have the same problem as the first poster, in both Andreas09 template and Black letterhead template. When attempting to edit an existing Text Widget, the edit box displays only half of the edit box (the left vertical half remains obscured). It is possible to drag the entire box to the right so that all existing text or the html for an existing image source are displayed but the window will not “stick” to allow you to work within it and it jumps straight back to being half obscured as soon as you attempt to place the curser inside the window.

It is possible to delete the existing html without dragging the edit box out to the right, character by character, using the backspace key, athough obviously the left vertical half of the text is obscured while this is on progress – so I have been able to delete the html for an image which I no longer required in left hand column of my blog and I was able to save the changes (I have not tried deleting existing text by blocking entire lines of type).

Adding new text is very difficult as you cannot see what you are typing on the “obscured” left hand side of the Text Edit box until the vertical centre of the Text Edit box had been reached (and you cannot correct any errors on the left hand side as you cannot insert the curser).

Other problems I have yet to resolve (which may be generic and not specific to Andreas09 or Black letterhead template or IE6) are:

Image inserting windows are scrambled, but just about navigable. Select “Center” for images and they are aligned left. Select for “Align left” and the image will align left, but wraps any text which is already typed or pasted below it. Getting images to appear in the required postion anywhere within a posting is tricky.

When changing colour of text, the “Are you sure you want to navigate away from this window” message” displays every time and has to be clicked away, which is tiresome (there may be a setting in browser options which might stop this from displaying).

When pasting an email address into the external link window, the fact that it is an email address is no longer recognised and the correct “mailto” coding is not inserted – so email addresses which are hidden behind “Email Fred” have to be coded for manually.

In Black letterhead the leading between lines of text on Pages is tighter than on the main blog page (not a huge issue, but would prefer that they were the same).

Other than that – I love it, and the bits that do work, all work much faster than before the upgrade. It would have been good, though, to have received an email warning that such radical changes to the management pages were about to take place – not all of us watch the forums or the WordPress Home Page, regularly.

Is there a way to only have the widgets show on my stagnate home page and on no other page? It’s annoying to see them on every single page…

I get the same “do you want to navigate away” message when I color code the text.

I also can’t highlight a block of text in the text widget. We went through a period of time last fall, then it was fixed. It’s broke again.

generation – that’s a function of the theme you are using. Some themes don’t show the sidebar on all pages.

I added a text widget the other night to my sidebar. It is stuck there and I can’t edit it, delete or move it. It’s driving me crazy. All my other widgets have the “edit” option but I can’t do anything with this new one and there are some mistakes in it grr! I was just playing around and now I’ve had this up there for almost 2 days. I e-mailed support earlier today and I’m waiting. I really hope they get this sidebar widget thing figured out soon. I use firefox so that is not the problem. I also tried switching themes but that didn’t help me either….any one have any ideas?

I’m using firefox and it won’t let me remove a widget or edit it. Anyone know what I can do?

I should add that I am aware of the suggestion for using “Browser uploader” rather than Flash, and that there is a new version of Flash – but I’ve hesitated trying these out over the past few days in case it further screws things up, and for the next week or so it is imperative that I am able to continue to upload images – after that I will try these options. Is there a page anywhere on WordPress.com where staff are maintaining a list of known issues as they are alerted to them?

I am using Misty Look theme and just this morning, installed Firefox and that fixed my Text Widget editing problem. What a relief that was being able to edit the widget again after waiting so long for an IE fix.

I have just been able to c & p the html for a new image into an existing side bar Text Widget – then drag the window out to the right, to check that the code is correct, and save the changes – but this does mean it is vital that the code is correct to start with because of the difficulties accessing code on the left hand side of the editing window to correct any errors. I have not yet tried working within a new text window. Apologies to mods for referring to several different glitches within the same post – but there are now so many threads that it is hard to locate the best thread for any specific glitch – and if there was a WordPress page where staff were listing all known glitches, major or minor, then I would not have felt the need to mention them all here, in the knowledge that staff are well aware and working to fix.

I read your comments here and it seems you continue to struggle with IE6. Have you tried to use Firefox at all?

  • Unknown's avatar

    try to change your browser!

    @shimworld

Just downloaded Firefox. Yes, the Text Widget Edit box now displays properly – thank you.

I just wanted to say that I was able to access and edit my text widgets using IE which I never do. go figure. Usually Firefox is the answer.

Firefox has also fixed the “do you want to navigate away” message which appears when colour coding text and image insertion windows are no longer scrambled. One new problem is that headings in existing posts in IE6, which had, for example, been coded for Heading Size 5, now display in a much smaller size in Firefox – which means that all existing headings are now tiny and smaller than the text, itself, when viewed in the Firefox browser. Size 6 Heading is miniscule, in Firefox, although the size of the body text, itself, remains comparable between the two browsers.

Ho hum…does one now select heading size with Firefox users or with IE6 and IE7 users in mind? But good to have the other problems fixed.
