Can’t enable comments / featured image discolored

  • Unknown's avatar

The “Enable Comments” button as shown is unclickable. The comment form does not appear on my website. I’ve double checked that “allow people to post comments” is turned on in my settings. I’ve also tried clearing my browser cache.

Any featured image I add comes out with that pinkish hue as shown and is pixelated. I also can’t find any way to adjust the size and position of the featured image.

    Please help, thanks.

  • Hello!

Even with the Allow people to post comments on new articles setting enabled at Settings > Discussion, individual posts and pages can have comments disabled. This overrides the site-wide setting for that item.

In this case, the “About” page on your site has comments disabled (or “closed”). If you want to enable comments for that page, you can set the “Discussion” setting to open in the editor for that page from the right-side settings pane.

There’s more information about that Discussion setting here: https://wordpress.com/support/comments/#enable-comments-on-a-specific-post

As for the featured image: by default, the Twenty Twenty-Three theme includes a 50% opacity color overlay on featured images for both posts and pages. If you want to remove that overlay, you can do so by editing the Pages template in the Site Editor at Appearance > Editor > Templates > Pages. (To make changes for featured images on posts, you can instead select the Single Posts template.)

The Featured Image block appears as a gray placeholder rectangle; when it’s selected, you can view its style settings in the right-side settings pane to remove the color overlay.

This article is about a different block (the Cover block), but the color overlay settings are the same: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/cover-block/#cover-block-styles

You can also adjust the aspect ratio or set a specific height and width for all featured images on your site’s pages (or posts) from the block’s style settings as well. Keep in mind that smaller images may appear “stretched” or pixelated when used as a featured image though, regardless of the settings you apply.

Thank you so much! Do you know how I can reduce the compression on the images I upload so that they’ll be less pixelated? Even when I upload massive images they always come out pixelated.

  • Images aren’t compressed when you upload them, though different sizes/resolutions of each image are generated automatically for different contexts. For example, the Image block has a “resolution” setting to allow you to choose from different image sizes on a per-image basis.

You can also set your preferred maximum images sizes from Settings > Media, though the default values are usually sufficient and shouldn’t cause any drop in quality.

Checking over your site today, I’m not seeing any pixellated or low quality images. If you’re still seeing that on your end, this may be due to either your network connection or some stubborn browser caching if you recently updated the images to larger copies. Clearing your browser’s cache or viewing your site from a different network may help.
