Can't export all of my content. Just separately posts, pages and feedback
-
For some weeks now, I cannot export all of my content. Instead, I can export one by one posts, pages and feedback, but what about my blog’s settings? I guess the 3 separate backups do not include my settings, right?
I have to say here that I am using the Greek version of WP’s dashboard, and I ‘ve noticed that there are some Greek letters in the end of the final backup URL, when I hit the button after “Choose what to export”, like this:
Please, notice the percentage URL, after the word “&submit=”.
I was wondering if this Greek characters may cause the problem. Thanks in advance.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I was just able to run an export for you. I have placed it right here:
As @timethief pointed out, settings do not get exported, only content. The % symbols followed by letters and numbers are html code which are used to form non-latin characters such as Greek, Cyrillic, and Arabic. It’s quite normal for those strings to appear when working in those alphabets.
-
Also, please note that the upload of your export will expire after 1 week. Please be sure to download it immediately or it will be lost.

@ amightywp
Thank you for your nice gesture, I am saving the backup right now.
Perhaps my point wasn’t clear enough. I know what the percentage URLs stand for, non-latin characters. My question was like this:
When I choose separately one of the 3 partial backups, no Greek character appears in the export URL. Is this why the 3 partial backups work? I mean, the whole content backup do contain Greek characters, while the 3 others don’t. Just wondering if this causes the problem.
Anyway, thanks for your efforts, my download just finished, and I hope maybe next time I’ll perform the export procedure all by myself, hoping the problem will be solved, as in my point of view is a serious one. Can’t imagine my work without copies at any time I choose.
Thanks a lot )

Well, I was very happy today because, as I managed just a minute ago, it seems that the problem has been solved. I did managed to export all of my content just in one and only xml file.
Thanks to all WP happy engineers :)

No, it’s not. I was wrong.
I made a mistake and I thought that exporting of my articles was exporting of everything. The problem still exists. I’m disappointed.

It’s the same problem, from the beginning. I cannot export all of my content.
You provided me with a backup, and I’m thankful for your nice gesture, but this was 10 days ago. Since then, I’ve added a lot of critical content in my blog, and I still cannot make a backup procedure anytime I want to, as it was all these years in my involvement with WP.
So, if anything happens, the 10 days old backup will be more or less useless to me, since there’s not a full backup in my hands.
And surely, I cannot ask you for a similar gesture every time I would like to ensure my work with a backup procedure (practically every day), isn’t it?

I did not realize you were looking to do backups on a regular basis.
For blogs with larger amounts of content such as your own (with huge numbers of comments), you will need to break your backups up in to smaller pieces by date, at which point they should be able to complete and download without an issue.

Hello there,
I was wondering if there were any developments on the issue. It’s a little bit scary for me, adding and adding content in my blog all these weeks, and not having a backup with my work, well, it’s something that worries me. You probably don’t know this, but my blog is one of the best (some say it’s No #1) investigating journalism’s independent website in Greece with a lot of enemies, especially from the far-right and neonazi political parties in Greece, such as the nazi Golden Dawn
Last week, some of my blog’s content has been published as a book and it’s possible to confront some of these fascists in court.
Can anyone imagine what an unpleasant situation will I have to face, if Golden Dawn’s neonazi will try to shut my blog down, especially not having copies and backups of my work?
I’d like to remind these wonderful people of the WP team that there’s also another problem pending for a solution,
this one:Thank you in advance for your efforts.

If you are concerned about others gaining access to your account, we strongly recommend that you make use of the increased security options which we have available for you.
For example, you can enable 2 Step Authentication for your account: http://en.support.wordpress.com/security/two-step-authentication/
While doing so, we always recommend updating your password and updating it every few months.
The blog export feature is meant to serve as just that, a tool which allows your blog to be exported as-needed. It is not meant to be a resource to back up your blog on a daily basis. If you need to have daily or more often backups, you may want to consider a self-hosted WordPress.org blog where you can use a plugin to backup your blog as often as necessary.
In regard to the issue with your comments, I apologize. I had thought our developers reached out to you. Additional code work was done to fix the specific examples you provided us. Again, please keep in mind that your theme has been retired for over 2 years and so additional fixes may be a while in coming or may not be possible. If you could please let me know of any other instances where you are still having problems in your comments I will let the developers know.

Dear AMightyWP Happiness Engineer,
thank your for your answer.I’m not sure I understood what your phrase “as-needed” means. My “as-needed” means, well, if I have an option whether to choose between an old and partial export backup and a new and recent, why should I choose the first? As a matter of fact, what kind of reasonable people would ever choose the first? You, yourself, when you perform exports and copying procedures of your work, did you ever said “I’ll back it up since last year, it’s OK, no big deal if I will not have it all and complete”?
I don’t think so.
On the other hand, maybe I haven’t yet understood fully the meaning of “export”. Here’s my problem:
Wordpress gives me an option to export my work. It’s a nice thing because if my blog suddenly stops working or being shut down, I would have the possibility to import my work (my entire work, not some parts of it) to another blog.My problem is not that I’m afraid someone will take control of my account. My problem is that certain people (nazi thugs) are trying to shut down my blog because they are bothered from my investigation expose in their matters and their illegal activities. Here’s an example, translated in English for another news media website:
For another example for how serious thing are (and therefore, how critical is it for me to have a recent backup), you can check a post about my recently published book or even an article on how “The investigating judges (and the prosecutors) in the case of the Golden Dawn trial actually read my XYZ Contagion blog“,an achievement that was made possible only because WP gave me this chance, to publish my work on-line using its perfectly functioning WP software.
In this context, a couple of times, WP blocked my access to my blog and I couldn’t post any new content. Was there reports from my enemies to WP about my content? I really don’t know, but this happened the same days these fascists went to my country’s law enforcement agencies with a similar request: To stopping me from posting my research’s findings. These Greek state institutions and agencies fortunately didn’t buy their lies and I’ve been able to continue my work since, probably because Greek law courts believe in the right of free speech and free expression (and WP make it happen).
Then, after a while, these neonazi of Golden Dawn did it again, they tried one more time to stop me from publishing annoying researches about them and their illegal activities, this time with a lawsuit. Once again I won and my blog is still active.
But nothing is there to ensure me that the next time they will try the same, they will fail again. In a few weeks a big trial on Golden Dawn party and its crimes (including murders and attempted murders etc) will start in the Greek courts, the biggest political trial in Greece ever, and it’s possible and would be no surprise if they’ll attack me again and try to stop my WP voice.
So, I think it’s reasonable for me to be able to have “as-needed” a fresh and recent export (the one that WP offers to its users), in case something bad happens, to be ready to import my work (entirely, the whole work, not a part of it) to a new blog.
Am I asking too much? I think I’m asking exactly what WP offers to all its users, a simple export.

Our export tool is designed to allow users to export their site to another location. It is generally meant to be used only once, when someone is leaving WordPress.com move their site to a self-hosted WordPress.org site, to Blogger, to TypePad, or any number of other blogging sites. The export tool is not a backup tool. That is not what it is designed for.
Again, if you are concerned about your site being in some way taken down and you want regular backups then I would recommend that you export your site and go with WordPress.org where you can use one of the many backup plugins that will allow you to do a backup anytime you want (up to several times a day, if you so desire).
-
If I may be so bold as to suggest this, one can register another .wordpress.com blog, make the visibility private, so others do not even know it exists, and use it as a complete backup of their active site.
-
Alternatively, incremental backups of the most recent information could also be a solution. Older posts don’t need to continue to be backed up, so if you do a backup of the most recent month or so then there shouldn’t be any issues with the tool.
-
That’s exactly what I mean. Once one creates a “mirror blog” one needs only to do incremental backups every month or so.

@amightywp – why not make Vault Press available to WordPress.COM blogs??, WP seems to be grubbing for money, this would be an upgrade that could be sold with a straight face (not the new improved everyone gets the $99.- bundle) – and make it so once content is transferred to Vault Press it would be immune from a take down notice – there is the little problem of restoring from Vault Press as I think it is along the lines of a full system and database backup so extra restore code of some sort would need to be custom written – and that should also include the media which is not in an export file
