Can't figure out excerpt mode Scratchpad theme
-
Hey all. I have been trying to make my home page show excerpts of my posts, rather than the whole post. I have tried editing my posts and adding the excerpt manually. That did not work.
I have also tried going to the admin dashboard and setting it that way, through settings-reading-summary (rather than full text).
I also went under posts-all posts-screen options-excerpt and that has not worked either. I have the Scratchpad theme.I have no idea what I am doing wrong! I have tirelessly googled this and could use a second opinion
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @hannahpetri6385 ,
I understand your frustration. I’m not sure if that is how this theme is supposed to work. Some themes automatically display an excerpt on the home page, but others may not. (The top post on the demo page shows a “Read More” button, but that could be achieved through the method I will describe below.) I’ll tag this post for staff to check, just in case.
In the meantime, you’ll be happy to know there is a way to manually add a “Read More” link to posts displayed in your home page. What you will have to do is, when editing your posts, insert a “more” tag at the position you want the excerpt to cut at. If you are using the new Gutenberg editor, create a new block in your post and you will find the “more” tag underneath “Layout Elements”. You’ll have to do that for each post, but I have tried it out on my test site and confirmed it does work!
Let us know how that goes. All the best!

Hi again,
I did a bit more search and found, not all themes natively show an excerpt of posts on the front page. A staff member ( @fstat ) said on the following forum post…
The more tag is universal and works on all themes, even the ones that natively add a read more button to the posts.
Hence, some themes natively give excerpts, while others don’t. Unfortunately, the Scratchpad theme does have this feature, so the only way to show excerpts on the front page is to add a more tag in individual posts as I explained above.
If you are interested in themes that natively create an excerpt of posts on the front page, then the following link will show you all the themes that do that.
