Can’t find a free option to launch my site. Why?
-
I already have on free site on wordpress.com. I just created a 2nd one. But it won’t let me publish without picking a paid plan. I thought it was free, like my first site. Any suggestions of what I can do?
-
Hi there,
Please have a look at these visual instructions to select the free plan. The free plan is there=)Have a great day.
-
Hi there, do let us know if you succeeded in launching your 2nd free WPcom site or need more help.

I haven’t had any success. I have a free domain name. And in the left hand column it says that the site is private and a “free” plan. But when I click on “Launch Site”- it only gives me $ plans. and in the settings, the privacy settings are phased out and you can see where I should click, but none of it is activated and I can’t click into any of the options. How do I resolve this? Or do I have too much content on there? Exceeded a limit perhaps?
Thanks -
Hi there, unless you’ve passed the 3GB of free storage on the free plan, you should be able to launch your free WPcom site.
Please try clicking the
Launch Sitebutton in your 2nd site’s dashboard at My Sites > Manage > Settings > General > Launch Site.Let us know how that goes.

When I click that Launch Site button, it only gives me pay for plans- no free option. How can I see if I went over the 3GB storage limit? Where is that found? And thanks for this help!

I’ve gone ahead and flagged this thread for Staff assistance. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

OK, I’ve confirmed that there is a Skip Purchase option for that site when you click Launch Site.
Or you’d be welcome to simply set the site to public here:

Sorry, I clicked on your link above for setting it to public, but that whole privacy area on my draft site is shaded out and you cannot click on private or public button settings. oh well. Thanks for your help.

Ah, I just clicked in once more to make sure the “Skip Purchase” and “Free” options weren’t broken, and I inadvertently launched it on this end (thinking there was one more step.)
If you want to undo that, the settings link will work now for sure.

Never mind. I logged out and when I logged back in there was an option to use the free version available when I tried to launch it.

Can’t find a free option to launch my site. Why?
short answer: It ain’t easy.
long answer: (below)During creation of a new site, before you get to the page with “Launch Site” option, you’ll be offered various paid plans on a page that says at the top, “Pick a plan that’s right for you. Choose a plan. Upgrade as you grow.” Above the plans and below the title you’ll find an option (link) to “Start with a free site.” Clicking that will create the free site, and you may either launch it immediately or at any time in the future when you’re ready to launch it.
When you do decide to launch the site, you may do so at either My Sites > My Home, with the “Launch my site” button in the Site Privacy section of the page, or at My Sites > Settings > Launch Site. After clicking the “Launch Site” button at either page, you will again be presented with paid plan options. You may ignore those and choose the “Skip Purchase” option.
However, even after choosing to “Skip Purchase” as described above, a third attempt to sell you a plan is made as different version of the Plans page returns with the heading “Almost there, pick a plan that’s right for you. Upgrade as you grow.” My, aren’t they persistent? The way to avoid purchase this time is to choose the option/link “Continue with your free site.”
I’m going to try make a screen recording or GIF to demonstrate the steps and hurdles involved in creating a free site that I’ve described here.

I’d love to know exactly at what point people are constantly getting stuck with this. I’ve just created and launched a free site (my 20th). It took 11 seconds and there were only 3 steps.
-
Hi there! It’s relatively easy for us, because we know where the “Launch site” buttons are, and where the “Skip Purchase,” “Start with a free site,” and ” “Continue with your free site” links are. If you know a method that doesn’t involve clicking those three links, please share it with us.

By “us” I mean those who’ve been doing this for a while. The process of creating a free site is obviously not so easy for newcomers. Obvious, because of the number of new members asking how to accomplish the trick.
