Can't find 'Home'

  • Unknown's avatar

My Moka theme came with a ready-made, automatic link called Home. This points to my URL threeoranges.london. In my WP admin, ‘Home’ is not listed in my pages; it is also not listed in my posts. I can’t find out how to edit it or delete it. I tried creating my own page called ‘Home’. Now there are 2 showing. I can’t get rid of either one. I did delete the one I created. I also emptied Trash, but 2 ‘Home’ links are still displayed. What I really want the ‘Home’ link to do is take the user back to my Front Page. What should I do?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

It looks like the “Home” menu item is now a custom link pointing back to your home page here:

    https://threeorangesblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

Is this working how you would like it to now?

  • Unknown's avatar

Could you let me know how you did that? I couldn’t actually find ‘Home’ in my pages or posts. Where is it edited?

I just did a quick test of my theme. In my theme if I click ‘About’ on the left, I can see it change to that page. Ditto if I click ‘Welcome’. Nothing at all happens if I click ‘Home’. Maybe I don’t understand what it’s supposed to do. In my experience ‘Home’ always takes the user back to an initial opening page. I want ‘Welcome’ to be my starting page. I applied the ‘Front Page Slider’ template to ‘Welcome’. So I can’t see what ‘Home’ is actually useful for. Do I have to have it showing as a link?

The “Home” menu item is what’s referred to as a “custom link.” This means that the “Home” menu item just points to a URL. In this case, it points to threeoranges.london as you can see here:

    http://d.pr/i/15IIJ

“Home” isn’t actually a page on your site. It’s useful for directing visitors to a certain URL. For instance, some bloggers use custom links in their menu to direct readers to things like Facebook. You can read a bit more about custom links here:

    Menus

Currently, when you click the Home menu item, it does direct you back to your main page (threeoranges.london). However, your blog doesn’t have any posts to display on your main page so it comes up blank. If you added a post here, it would be shown when you click “Home”:

    https://threeorangesblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

    Does that help to clarify?

Thanks for the clarification. If three.oranges.london IS my main page, why don’t I see it in my list of pages when I do ‘Pages > All’?

Currently, your home page (threeoranges.london) displays your latest posts. It isn’t a page you’ve created, which is why it doesn’t appear here:

    https://threeorangesblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

By default, WordPress.com automatically creates the home page for you.

If you instead wanted to create a specific page titled “Home” that showcased certain content (an intro to your site for example), you could do that following the instructions here:

    Set the Homepage

Give that a read through. Understanding the difference between the default “Home” and the page you create should help to clarify!

Thanks for the useful link. I followed the steps in the tutorial about front pages. I created a new page, typed in some sample text, applied a front page template and set the reading for it to be the front page (that’s what I hadn’t done).

But when I viewed the page the sample text isn’t showing at all. (the visibility is set to public.)

    What am I doing wrong?

You’re almost there! The issue here is with the page template “Front Page Sticky Posts.” That’s actually meant to showcase some of your posts, not static content. The theme documentation on Moka breaks that down under “Create your custom front page”:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/moka/

If you change that back to the default as shown here, you should be all set:

I called the new page ‘Gallery’ and typed some sample content text. I can see that text now, thanks.

I notice that for the other page – About – I can see the title ‘About’ above the text. I expected to see the same thing for ‘Gallery’ – title above, but the title isn’t showing. Can you let me know what I should do?

    Hi!

I’m not seeing a Gallery page on your site here:

    https://threeorangesblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

Are you referring to a different page perhaps?

Sorry! I was playing around with the settings to try to get it to display. I changed the title to ‘Welcome’. It’s this one:
    Permalink: http://threeoranges.london/welcome/
I applied the default template and published.
If I go to Settings > Reading I don’t see the option for ‘Fixed Page’ like I saw for the other pages I created. Also if I go to Appearance > Menus, ‘Welcome’ is not in the list.
I’ve obviously done something really wrong but I can’t see what it is. I tried clearing the Trash and pressing F5 to refresh but that didn’t help either.

I think I have partly answered my own question. I had the page set as ‘private’. What seemed to work was to set it as ‘public’, then publish, then I could see the Fixed Page option in Settings > Reading. When I did it this way, I could also see ‘Welcome’ in Appearance > Menus. After that I could set it back to ‘Private’ (don’t really want anyone looking at it yet) and the Welcome page was still there in the theme view.

However, the title ‘Welcome’ still doesn’t appear above the image and content text – the other page titles do appear. What do I need to do?

Thanks for your patience with all this.

    Laura

    Hi Laura!

Regarding the private page setting, that will influence whether or not the page appears under the drop-downs you mention. You will need to have the page set to public to set it in place.

However, the title ‘Welcome’ still doesn’t appear above the image and content text – the other page titles do appear. What do I need to do?

When a page is set as the front page on the Moka theme, the title of the page is automatically hidden. The easiest way around this would be to enter the page title within the body of the page above the image. Can you give that a try?
