We cannot install themes on WordPress.COM
There are two kinds of WordPress: .COM and .ORG
http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/What is the link to your site?
-
Hi. In order to assist you, we need the URL of your blog, starting with http:// please. Thanks.

Hi there I’m also having troubling “installing themes on wordpress.com
Help?

@fluffymocchi
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install themes into them. The themes found on the internet are for wordpress.ORG installs which run on different software.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/On free hosted wordpress.COM blogs we can only use the themes which have been coded to run on this multi-user software and made available to us here. > Appearance > Themes and no others. We cannot edit either themes or templates on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/
If you wish to have complete control over a blog, the ability to upload themes and plugins, and to edit themes and templates then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.

Thanks so much for the clarification. If I do switch to wordpress.ORG would the post I’ve created in .COM be transferred to ORG automatically?
-
No there is no such thing as automatic data transfer. We can export and import but as but it’s only one post you can easily copy and paste it into a new WordPress.org install after you hire a web host and set up the install.

Hi there, I purchased a domain and hosting from godaddy and i redirected a wordpress blog to it, to avoid the add theme limitation for ree hosted WordPress.COM blogs. I uploaded successfully an unzipped theme folder to /wp-content/themes on godaddy but still I can find the add theme button in the blog…what did I do wrong…appreciate your help as I am only an amateur in these matters :) and I need to have my theme and blog up running
-
Go to appearance > themes in that dashboard and if you uploaded it to the right place the theme should show up there.
Also on self-hosted installations, you need to inquire at http://wordpress.ORG/support/ as that is where the self-hosted software you are using is supported.

@mchantaf
You are posting to the wrong support forum. We cannot help you here at wordpress.com as yours is a WordPress.org install is being hosted by godaddy you must register an account with WordPress.org and post to http://wordpress.org/support/WordPress.com and WordPress.org run on different software > WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: The Differences

I have done a domain mapping to my wordpress.com (from http://www.so-calledsocial.com to http://www.so-calledsocial.wordpress.com) does that mean I should create another blog on wordpress.org(thanks for your help, i am not a savvy in this domain and I am discovering things :) i’ve checked the links you’ve sent me and I will do some more research but if you can help me it would save me a lot of time
Cheers!) -
Hi there, I purchased a domain and hosting from godaddy and i redirected a wordpress blog to it…
That would lead us to believe that you have your site at godaddy.
Buying a domain and mapping it to a blog here doesn’t give you any superpowers. Your site is still hosted here at wordpress.com and all the restrictions still apply It is just that your site hosted here appears under your own domain name.
We cannot add themes at wordpress.COM. Themes found on the internet are for self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG.
So yes, if you want to install themes found on the internet, you will have to self-host your site on Godaddy.
You can get a refund on the domain mapping if it has been less than 30 days.

but I received the below message from godaddy from which i understand that my blog is hosted on godaddy, isn’t that right:
“Dear Fadi Mchantaf,
WordPress 3.2.1 has been successfully installed on your hosting account. To launch this application, click on the URL below or copy and paste it into your browser window:
To view the installation details and launch this newly-installed application, click on “Your Applications” from the Hosting Control Center. From there, click on the tab “My Applications” and you will have access to all the applications that you have installed on your site.
WordPress Tip: there are hundreds of WordPress plug-ins that can greatly enhance your site. However, be aware that some plug-ins can slow down the site performance. If you notice slow response from your site after installing a plug-in, try removing it to see if performance is restored”

@mchantaf
Please note that the only web host on this site is WordPress.com. You must post to http://wordpress.ORG/support/ because that is where your software, which is different from ours, is supported. There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install plugins or themes. Those found on the internet are for wordpress.ORG installs which run on different software.

Your site is not automatically “moved” to godaddy. All they have done is to upload the software for you.
Your DNS records on your domain name are still pointing at the wordpress.com servers. You need to get the DNS stuff from godaddy (that should have been in your welcome email) and then go into store > domains and change the nameservers. See here.
It will take 24-48 hours (most times less) for the propagation to complete on the nameserver change and then you have to export your content from here and import it into the godaddy installation.
