can’t find other widgets

  • Unknown's avatar

I just looked at how widgets work in the support part of wordpress.com, and it says there should be a ‘search’ area when I go to choose widgets, and that I can add other widgets to the available widget list. But mine doesn’t have the ‘search’ area in my widgets window. is this a paid extra? or is there something I’m not seeing?

Also, whats the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org? aside from you hosting the blog on your own server, I mean. What additional features do you gain by using wordpress.org? is it still free to run your blog if you use wordpress.org and host it yourself? And can you start your blog on wordpress.com and then move it over to wordpress.org at a later date?

Thank you so much. Its so confusing to slog through all of the support articles, so I’m sorry if it I should have looked there first. I did try. :)

    Thanks,
    Shira

You can find the differences between the two WordPress types by reading the sticky thread on the subject at the head of the forum.

We can’t give you advice specific to your blog (ie answer the questions in the first paragraph) unless you give us a link to your blog, starting with http. The answers depend on the blog.

Oh! the blog is at http://www.kavanahgarden.wordpress.com

I’ll go read that sticky. Thank you.

As for the widgets screen, that support info page is obsolete. Now you just drag available widgets from the left column to the right.

so we can’t use other widgits that exist? like at wordpress.org, where i have another blog (which i very poorly understand) there are a million widgets you can download and install. Are we limited to that short list thats there?

Also, if I start a blog on wordpress.com, can I later move it to the wordpress.org system?

Yes, the only widgets you can add to your WordPress.COM blog are the ones on the Widgets tab in the Dashboard. http://support.wordpress.com/topic/widgets-sidebars/

Having said that, there have been some very creative uses of those widgets, so if you have something specific, that doesn’t include using javascript, ask in the forums and maybe someone can advise a workaround.
