Can't find the drafts in app

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! I can’t find the drafts in the app. I know there have been similar topics on this forum, but I have been unable to locate the place where I can toggle between drafts/published/scheduled blog posts.
    This is what I see:
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/sz1wJls0V5q1VQdn1

    Phone model: Huawei Honor 7x
    Android version: 7.0
    Wordpress App version: 9.8

  • There is no separate tab/ folder in the app for Draft and Published posts. All posts will appear in the same tab. I see one post in your screenshot which says “Local Changes”. I think you’re editing that post on your app and haven’t published the changes yet. Similarly, you’ll see Draft posts on the list. See a screenshot here.

    Hello Akumarjain, thanks for answering!
Alas, the drafts don’t show up in that tab. They don’t show up anywhere at all. I have a million drafts on the site, and they are not visible in the app. Similarly, when I create a post on the app, it disappears after it is saved as a draft. The “local changes” you see on the screenshot are unrelated to drafts – they appeared after I tinkered with already published posts.

    Any other ideas?

OK for some reason, a draft created by another user of our site is visible in the app!

But not the drafts I create – either via the app, or the regular admin interface of the site.

  • That’s little strange. However, I’ll tag this thread with modlook for the attention of the support staff. Please wait while someone from the support team gets back to you on this.

  • Hi there,

Can you please re-install the latest version of the Android app from the following link:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wordpress.android

If this doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

Dear Fstat, thanks, I already have the latest version. I reinstalled it today to see if that would fix the problem, but it didn’t.

  • Thanks for giving that a try.

Are you able to see the “help” link with in the app?

Please contact us through that link so we can have a look at the app data to see what is happening here.

One last thought, did you double check that you’re on the right site? If you have multiples you could be looking for something under the wrong site.

Dear Lizkarkoski, thanks, I’ll ask for help within the app. Yea, I am sure I’m on the right site! I work on it every day, and want to be able to do the regular editing stuff on my phone. Thanks for your help!

  • I understand and this sounds frustrating for you! When you submit a help request through the app you can also add a screen shot of what you’re seeing when you try to find the draft. This will be helpful. If you don’t hear back in the next day or so through the app let me know.

I found the solution to my problem. The reason I was not seeing the drafts in the app is because on our site they are assigned the archive category by default, which does not show up on our main page when published (articles are still accessible through hyperlink). When I assign the drafts a category before saving, both on the app and on the site, they become visible. Apparently, the app reads our visibility settings of posts that were intended for the front page in published mode. I couldn’t imagine this was the reason, because in the admin section of our site, the posts are displayed in chronological order no matter the category or status. Not sure how many other people were struggling with this problem, but perhaps it would be worth fixing this bug in later versions of the app?

I don’t understand what you mean here. There is no automatic archiving on WordPress.com – there is no way to remove a post from the main post list at all. I also don’t see any category called “Archive” in the category list on your site.

That is not how the app works, and I cannot replicate the behaviour you’re describing at all on my end.

Rather, it sounds like the posts list wasn’t updating correctly, and then a change you made either unstuck whatever wasn’t updating, or it happened to get unstuck on its own.

Next time you experience something like this, please try restarting your phone. Among other things, that flushes out the cache which fixes most issues to do with content in apps not updating as it should.

Hi Kokkieh, thanks for the answer.
The reason you don’t see the category is precisely because it’s hidden.
    http://euromaidanpress.com/category/archive/
The articles in that category don’t show up on the main page.
I’m not sure it would be possible to replicate what I was describing if the configuration of one’s site differs from ours with its “archive” setting.
Nevertheless, I started seeing the drafts when I assigned them a category which differed from the default “archive” one. It did not start working neither when I restarted the phone nor reinstalled the app, so the problem lies in the categories.

  • http://euromaidanpress.com is not a site hosted on WordPress.com. You did not provide the site you need help with, so we’ve been looking at the only site in your WordPress.com account, euromaidanpr.wordpress.com

The open source WordPress software also does not allow hiding a category from the main posts feed, which tells me you are using a plugin to do this – looks like you’re using Ultimate Category Excluder (https://wordpress.org/plugins/ultimate-category-excluder/).

If this causes the posts to also not appear in the posts list in the app, it’s not a problem with the app but with the plugin. The app uses an API to get information from your site about the posts that appears on it. If the plugin prevents certain posts from being visible via the API, then there’s nothing we can do about it. It also looks like someone else already reported this issue, and the plugin developer didn’t really even try to help them with it:

    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/excluding-from-front-page-makes-post-disappear-from-api/

It looks like that plugin has since been removed from WordPress.org, else I’d have suggested you contact the plugin author to let them know their plugin is incompatible with the WordPress mobile app. As it is, it might be a good idea to look for another plugin to do this, as you likely won’t be getting any more updates for that plugin, meaning it will both become a security risk and may end up breaking your site due to incompatibility with future WordPress updates.

    Dear Kokkieh,
Thank you! This explains everything. We’ll think about replacing the plugin.

I’m marking this question as resolved.
