Can't fix top menu after deleting

I’m using the Pilcrow theme and had customized the menu that appears at the top of the page. I was trying to move this menu to a sidebar, so I deleted the menu. However, this menu still appeared at the top of the page. I tried to recreate the menu under “Appearance” – “Menus”. However there now seems to be no connection between this recreated menu and the actual menu that appears on the blog, so it seems to be impossible to edit the menu. If someone can help me either fix this menu or remove it entirely I would appreciate it. Note that we have not purchased custom theme capability, so this could be a limitation.

If you do not want any menu at the top, create a second custom menu that is completely empty and assign that menu to the primary menu location.

That’s ingenious, but remember that the custom menu has no connection with the menu on the site for some reason.

What shows up as your top menu is determined by what you select in the Theme Locations pulldown (in Appearance > Menus). If the blank option is selected, you get the default menu of the theme (that is, all your published parent pages).
If you want no tabs below your blog title, you do what TSP suggested: create and save an empty menu, select that menu in the Theme Locations pulldown, save. If you want a custom menu in your sidebar, you create that menu, add the items you want, save; then go to Appearance > Widgets, add a Custom menu widget, select the menu you created from the widget pulldown, save.
