Cant get blog to look like theme preview

  Hey im trying to get my blog to actually look like the themes. It keeps posting in a linear form down the page rather than the grid i have wanted. It also is posting the entire blog post on the front page rather than an excerpt. Can anyone help me with this? I am currently using the theme Espie, and have tried it on a few other themes. The one i want is Illustratr but it is not looking correct either.
