Can't get home/front page to be static

    Hi! My homepage does not show up in the Customization-Front menu, so I cannot set it up as a static page.

    I did just switch from outdated Neat theme to Motif. I’ve been grappling with some kind of “two home pages” mix-up for a few days, just got it sorted out (I think) so that my actual blog url does go to the homepage. But, I am not able to use the Customization settings to make it static, I’ve already set Posts Page as the posting page. Any ideas?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    To create a static front page, first you have to make a page and publish it. The page can be named anything (it doesn’t have to be named “Home”). However, I did check your site just now, and I found that you did create a page named “HOME” but it’s in the trash. Maybe you deleted it by mistake? In any case, if you restore it (or create a new page to use for the home page), you should be able to select it in Appearance > Customize > Front as long as it is published and not saved as a private page.

    The problem is that I want the url of my site and the homepage to be the same page, just like it is in my littlepuppetstudio.com blog. The homepage that I have in my trash is a different url, with /home after it. So then, when someone googles my url, they get one homepage, when they hit the home tab, they get a different one! And one of those has one of those “dates” on the post, which I really want to get rid of.

    When one starts building a blog from scratch, I believe the Home page is the url page. I did that years ago when I first built this blog, but there was no option back then for static front pages, so someone helped me to make a go-around to make a diff front that made it static… and I’m pretty sure that this resulted in two home pages, one hidden. I had no Home tab in m menu, I had a widget box that said “Click on the title for Homepage”.

    The instructions I gave will do that. You have to publish the one with the /home URL and *then* go to Appearance > Customize > Front and select that one as the home page and then the URLs will match after that.

    Lots has been updated since then! The problem you described with a double home button used to happen with some themes, but not all themes, and the way to work around that now if your theme doesn’t handle it automatically would be to use a custom menu. You shouldn’t need to though. Just try my instructions first.

    Thank you, thanks for pushing me to update, I was afraid to take the leap. I’m SO happy with it, and I love how it coordinates with my puppet one! Hoping to make it public in the next day or so :)

    Can you take a peek and see if you know why I get a little white stripe on the right when I try to set my featured image? I think the photo is large enough. Is there a way to fix it?

    I checked the specs (at the bottom of the page) at http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/motif/ and I see that it says the main column maximum width is 705.

    Then I checked the featured image for “Spinning, Knitting, Felting, Weaving…” and I see that it is only 700 pixels wide.

    So I think you’re right.

    The best way to fix it would be to upload a slightly larger image. Another way to fix it would be to stretch the image using CSS. However, be careful when stretching images because if you stretch them too much then they can look pixelated and low quality. Here is some CSS you can try adding to your Appearance > Customize > CSS editor:

    div.entry-thumbnail > img {
    	width: 100%;
    }

    Make sure to test a few different posts that have featured images in them once you’ve made the change, just to make sure everything’s working well.

    Phew, did it! Had to download a program to upsize photos, success!!

    Thank you, again and again :)
