Can’t get MP3 file on separate website to load in my blog
-
I am trying to get an MP3 file to play on my blogsite, using the first option advised in a closed FAQ item:
How do I get music on my blog?
Upload an mp3 file somewhere on the internet and link to it like this [audio ] with the address inside.
Like this:
[audio http://wpcom.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/mattmullenweg-interview.mp3%5D******************
It’s not clear to me how this is done. Where to I put that link? I’ve assumed it is the ‘From URL’ section in the ‘Add Audio’ window. Then, when I try to run the link from my blog page, it tries to go to a page whose address is http://www.ngaiopress.com/John%20MacGibbon/. The URL that I entered in the ‘from URL’ window is http://www.ngaiopress.com/John MacGibbon’s Goldminer Music, 1977.mp3/I’ve entered it in the from URL page as, variously:
(a) [audio http://www.ngaiopress.com/John MacGibbon's Goldminer Music, 1977.mp3/]
(b) audio http://www.ngaiopress.com/John MacGibbon’s Goldminer Music, 1977.mp3/ and
(c) http://www.ngaiopress.com/John MacGibbon’s Goldminer Music, 1977.mp3None of these works.
The URL is certainly correct. If it is entered into a browser it will go straight the the website and download that MP3 file.
What am I doing wrong? It also occurred to me that maybe I should be entering the information in the HTML code, but I don’t know where I would do this.

Well, the site in your user name is not hosted here at wordpress.COM. If you have a blog here, please provide a link and consider changing the link in your user name as it is useless to the volunteers here.
If you are not hosted here at wordpress.COM, the instructions you read don’t apply to you.

Of those three entries you tried — take entry (a) and eliminate the slash (/)at the end. It should work. This is how I upload music on my blog an a regular basis as i have a music blog.

Hi devblog! Ok: that’s not the URL of THE mp3; or that’s not a VALID URL. (I hope you don’t mean that sondan’s suggestion is correct.)
-
It IS the URL of the .mp3 file, and yes it’s not a valid URL
Yes, her suggestion is correct, however because the URL is not valid, the file won’t open. Why is it malformed? because it contains spaces, apostrophes and commas, and the mp3 player might not be understanding those characters and complains about it.
-
Sorry, but you contradict yourself. You can’t have “correct suggestion” and “the file won’t open” together. Her suggestion was “take entry (a) and eliminate the slash (/)at the end”. That AlONE won’t work, for the reason you just explained (not to me, I hope).
-
No, I’m not contradicting myself. One thing is that her suggestion was correct (withing her knowledge) by removing the forward slash from the URL, and another is knowing (or not) if that would still resolve the problem.
If she had the same “technical” knowledge I have, and didn’t mention that the URL was malformed, then that’s another story.
Well, I was explaining that to you, her, the OP and whomever who would want to know why the URL was malformed.
-
Boys, boys. Play nice, now.
Here’s the url
http://www.ngaiopress.com/John MacGibbon's Goldminer Music, 1977.mp3If you copy that and paste it into your browser, it will play. So it is a valid url.
Now – will it work in our audio system is another whole question. The answer can be found on my test blog here http://vjptestblog2.wordpress.com/2008/12/04/test-mp3-file/
No, the file will not play. Because wordpress.COM doesn’t like filenames with spaces and punctuation in them.

BTW Vivian,
Just a small correction: Just because the URL loads in a browser, doesn’t make it valid. A valid URL would look like this:
http://www.ngaiopress.com/John%20MacGibbon%27s%20Goldminer%20Music%2C%201977.mp3No, the file will not play. Because wordpress.COM doesn’t like filenames with spaces and punctuation in them.
Actually, is not wordpress but the player itself. WordPress could take that kind of links but the code in the player won’t, hence, what I said:
because it contains spaces, apostrophes and commas, and the mp3 player might not be understanding those characters and complains about it.
The more you know.

Hello jmacg
Try to write
[audio=http://wpcom.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/mattmullenweg-interview.mp3]
with the symbol =
-
rolandlhu,
That’s the syntax used for the player plugin installed on self-hosted blogs, that won’t work here.
-
Hello devblog,
Excuse me but I don’t anderstand all. I have a blog “on line” (I haven’t not server) and this line works on my blog.
[audio=http://wpcom.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/mattmullenweg-interview.mp3] No problem.
I don’t exacly anderstand what is a “self-hosted blog”.
Sorry for my english. I am french and I have forgoten my english but I speak spanish fluently if you want.
Thank a lot
-
@devblog – Understood about the malformed URL. And yes, the wordpress.COM player doesn’t like those things in the file names.
@rolandlhu – please read this sticky https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

rolandlhu,
Gracias

What I basically said to Rolandlhu was that after making a test, I found out that the syntax which includes the “equal” sign, does work on a wordpress.com blog as well, so both syntax are fine.
I just learned something new.

Hi – I am the original poster and I’ve not been able to get back before now for reasons I won’t bore you with. Thanks for various suggestions, which I’ll now try.
No thanks for all the criticism about me not having a WordPress.com blog. I do have one. It is https://jmacg.wordpress.com/
I have no idea why it might not be showing up to the rest of you. I just followed my nose when starting the blog and didn’t choose anything that would make it invisible, as far as I know. If anyone can tell me how to make it visible, I’d like to know. I came to this forum as jmacg, and jmacg is in my blog address.
