@mwfinchwren – I’ve tagged this thread for Staff assistance. Please be patient for their reply as it is a long weekend in the US.
@unsmileys – your situation is different than mwfinchwren’s and I have replied to you in your own thread here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/problems-moving-content-1?replies=4#post-2801607

@justjennifer, I appreciate your tagging this.
I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. I actually started trying to import my WordPress.org blog on Saturday morning because my self-hosting is about to end and I have chosen not to renew. However, I don’t know what to do because I can’t get the blog imported but my time is running out to get things transferred over.
Please help! And thank you!

I just tried to import my self-hosted blog into my WordPress.com blog again. I simply got a message that said it was processing and to contact Support if things didn’t happen within 24 hours. It has been 24 hours since my original request for importing.

Hello again, I understand your frustration. Staff will have to clear out the current import in order for you to try again, but they do have a backlog of forum threads marked for their assistance. Please be patient.
You didn’t mention when your current hosting will end, but take into account that for images to be pulled over to your WordPressdotcom site, your self-hosted site needs to be online.
Now let’s wait for Staff to reply.

@justjennifer: Yes thank you. I contacted my hosting company and this solved the problem for me.
Maybe @mwfinchwren could also check with his/her hosting company

Hi there, @mwfinchwren
It looks like the importer on your site got stuck. This could be because your file is very near to our maximum file size limit for imports.
I’d recommend you look for an XML splitter app online and use it to break your file up into 2 or 3 smaller pieces and try to import those instead. Please let me know if you need any more help with this.

The self-hosted exporter works exactly like the WP-Admin exporter over here, yes. The only difference I know of is that we automatically split the export file based on the number of posts, while the .org exporter does not do this.

Hey kokkieh!
So, I was able to find an XML splitter, and ran the process and split my 14,000 KB xml file into 8 smaller ones. I have imported the first one and got this message on my Import page: “We’re processing your import now and will send you an email when it’s all done. If you don’t hear from us within 24 hours, please contact support, and we’ll get everything fixed.”
Can I continue to upload the rest of the files or do I have to wait to hear back from you all?

Actually, I think I answered my own question. I tried to open Import on my finchnwren.wordpress.com site and it is still on the “processing” page and I can’t import another file, apparently, while the other file is still being processed by y’all.
Any guesses on how long this process might take? My web host contract is over tonight (that’s why I tried to start this on Saturday morning :) ) and I am trying not to pay for a new three years.
Thanks!

I can’t tell you exactly how long, but it typically takes anything from half an hour to a few hours, depending on the size of the file. The first file appears to still be importing, so you’ll need to wait for now.
The import files should still import even if your old site goes offline. The only problem is that image files won’t be able to import, as they’re not included in the files, but are only imported after the import file completes.
So I’d recommend you also get a full database backup and a full media library backup of your site from your hosting provider before they take the site offline. That way, should the imports not complete in time you’ll still have all the data of your site and we can try to make another plan.

It looks like the first file finished importing while I was writing my reply, so you can now import the next file.
