Can't get name servers to point to new host

  • Unknown's avatar

I have created a new website on another host and have tried pointing the name servers for my domain to the new host, but for some reason the changes haven’t taken effect. I made the changes last Wednesday and still no change. Did I do something wrong? Thanks.

    Hi, Don.

What’s the domain name that you’re trying to repoint?

Changes like this usually take effect fairly quickly, so since it’s been since last Wednesday, there’s likely something wrong with the settings.

Where is the new site hosted?

It’s hard to diagnose the exact problem since I can’t see the settings on your account, but I’d suggest that you review these two articles to see if you can spot what went wrong.

    https://www.siteground.com/tutorials/getting_started/transfer_point_domain.htm

That one shows how to find the nameservers for your SiteGround account.

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

That one shows how to enter these nameservers for your domain name in your WordPress.com account.

You should not have to include IP addresses when you enter the nameservers into the WordPress.com admin.

If you go to https://wordpress.com/my-domains select the domain name and click edit, then click on Name Servers in the left menu, you’ll be able to see if the settings are still on the default WordPress.com servers or not.

The article explains how to change them if needed. Changes usually take effect almost immediately, although they sometimes can take a day or so.

If all of the information is already correct with the SiteGround servers, then we can mark this thread for staff to look at, or you can contact them by email to help@wordpress.com.

I did everything as you suggested, including changes to the DNS area of SiteGround. Still can’t get the WordPress name servers section to save the new custom name servers. I’m pretty frustrated. But thanks for your help. Perhaps it’s a technical issue on WordPress’ end. If you could have someone on WP staff look into it, I’d be grateful. Thanks.

Okay, I’ve tagged it for Staff to look at. Sorry I wasn’t able to help further.

    Hi Don,

I have looked into your account and don’t see anything that would be preventing you from changing the name servers following the guide noebiewan provided. Are you getting an error when you update the name servers?

To update the name servers to point to Site Ground do the following:
    1) Visit your My Domains page at https://wordpress.com/my-domains
    2) Click “Edit” to the right of the domain
    3) Click “Name Servers”
    4) Click “Use Custom Name Servers” radio button
    5) Enter the Name Servers provided by SiteGround in the place of the WordPress.com ones
    6) Click the blue “Save Changes” button

I have done all the steps that you suggested and got a Success! prompt. Yet the name servers in the two boxes reverted back to wordpress instead of the values I entered. Is that normal? I would have expected to see my new values remain there after clicking Save.

I will wait to see if this change is any different from the one I entered in the very same way last Wednesday. In the meantime, FYI, the two values from SiteGround are as follows:

    ns1.siteground330.com
    ns2.siteground330.com

Try entering them yourself and see if you can get them to “stick.” Thanks for your help.

    Don

It’s me again. :-) Did you try entering the values and did they stick? My domain is still pointung to WordPress. Please let me know progress is being made. Thank you.

    Hi Don,

I just did some test on a test domain of mine. Looks like you’ll want to click the “Remove” link next to the WordPress.com name servers before adding the Site Ground ones. Give that a go and let us know if you have further trouble.

Well! After some manipulation of the boxes (I had to press enter twice before it gave me three blank boxes — I populated two with the SiteGround nameservers) — I was FINALLY allowed to save my changes and they “stuck!” 😁 Thanks so much to you and your whole team for being so responsive over the past several days — I really appreciate it. Now we’ll see if this change does the trick. Thanks again, and I’ll post a — hopefully — final update soon. Adios! Don
