Can't get preview photo to show up in tweet

  • Unknown's avatar

I hope this is the right place to ask, but when I share a link to a post from my blog via twitter, it will show a preview in the tweet, but does not show an image (but it does show where the image should be). How do I get the image to show up in the tweet? I think that would look nicer and more attractive. Thanks.

Here is a link to one of my tweets as an example. I am guessing its an internal setting I am just not aware of.

I messed that up, and the blog I am asking about is not the one listed in my original post (OnePointSafety.com). That is one of my blogs, but I am actually asking this question for my newest blog: https://maroonandwhiterugby.wordpress.com/

  • HI there,

If I view your post’s source code in my browser, the post doesn’t have a opengraph image specified. That’s the image we place in the site header that we send to social media services to use in any previews they generate.

Looking at your post in the editor I see invalid HTML warnings on almost every block. This would indicate you made manual changes to the HTML after the block was added, but which prevents the block from working as it should. And then I also see that you apparently added the image into a paragraph block somehow, rather than as its own image block.

I’m guessing that’s preventing our system from recognising that as a valid image to use in the OG tags, as the image is not indicated by the markup that’s expected for an image added using the block editor.

Edit the post, remove that image from the paragraph block it’s currently in, and add it as a separate image block. Then update the post and let me know here so I can check if that causes the OG tags to update.

Thank you for the response. I truly appreciate the help.

<bockquote>the post doesn’t have a opengraph image specified.

I am not sure I know what that is, but I will try to find out.

Looking at your post in the editor I see invalid HTML warnings on almost every block. This would indicate you made manual changes to the HTML after the block was added, but which prevents the block from working as it should.

Okay, I will go back and look at that. However, I did not make any manual HTML changes as: (1) I would remember doing that; and (2) I am not sure how to do that. In any event, I may have done it inadvertently, so I will go back and see if there is something to fix.

I also see that you apparently added the image into a paragraph block somehow, rather than as its own image block.

This I might have actually done; as I didn’t know each block had to be separate and that images needed their own block.

The blocks are very confusing and hard to use. The old method of posting which was similar to writing an email and/or this forum response, was much more user friendly and easy to use.

The blocks give me a lot of trouble, for example, when I edit a post and try to add text at the bottom of an already created post, the screen always “glitches” and sends me back to the top of the page (however, it leaves the text cursor at the bottom where I was typing). I can then scroll down to the cursor in an attempt to see what I am typing, but any key stroke makes the page jump back to the top. This means that I have to write each post completely blind in that I can’t see the cursor and/or text as I am typing it.

I’m guessing that’s preventing our system from recognizing that as a valid image to use in the OG tags, as the image is not indicated by the markup that’s expected for an image added using the block editor.

Okay, I am not sure I understand this, so correct me if this is not what you meant.

The picture I included needs its own block and is therefore not showing up as a valid image to be used in the OG tags because it is not in its own block, right??

I am not sure what an OG tag is, but I will see if I can figure that out. Is that the same as the “opengraph image” you mentioned earlier?

Edit the post, remove that image from the paragraph block it’s currently in, and add it as a separate image block. Then update the post and let me know here so I can check if that causes the OG tags to update.

I will do this now, and report back once completed.

    Thanks again.

Wait, I think I remember now. I had to make edits in the “classic editor” because while I can create a new post in the block editor, I usually cannot edit a post that way.

Once a post is created on my blog, if I go to edit it, it will usually not load. I get a URL address that shows this: https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/maroonandwhiterugby.wordpress.com/155

But my screen / page is blank.

I would say that maybe out of 10-15 attempts at editing in Block Editor, it will open the post for editing maybe 1 time. However, if I go into the classic editor, I can usually edit the post.

Okay, so I did not update the old post as I cannot open it in the block editor. However, I created a new post and hope I solved the problem as I tried to use the tips you gave me from before.

However, in this new post, I did switch to classic editor as once the text got lengthy and I had to scroll down, I could no longer see what I was typing as I stated before, the block editor will not allow me to scroll down and view what I type (it will allow me to scroll down and view the post, but once I start typing, it moves back to the top of the post … so when I type, I have to type blind).

When that happened, I switched to classic editor to finish the post. However, before I inserted the photos, I went back to block editor and tried to use the method you told me about, so hopefully I at least did that correctly.

    Thanks for the help.

Here is my newest post that I am referring to: https://maroonandwhiterugby.wordpress.com/2019/10/02/aggies-win-rrrc-7s-tournament-in-austin/

Hmm, that can’t be good. Can you clarify whether this is happening on posts that were originally written in classic, or posts that were written in block, or posts that have a bit of both like the one you mentioned?

Could you also check for console errors, and get a screenshot of what you see?

Also, would you mind sharing what browser you’re using and what version?

I believe all of my posts were originally created in block. I only switch to classic when I can’t get the “edit page” to load/open.

    I will definitely try!

Also, would you mind sharing what browser you’re using and what version?

I think I am using Google Chrome: Version 49.0.2623.112 (64-bit); however my iOS is Mac OSX 10.7 … so I don’t think Chrome is supported anymore by my iOS.

  • Ahh okay. That might explain things a bit — Chrome is at version 77.something now, so your version might be getting hung up on something.

Do you have any other devices you edit your site with?

Do you have any other devices you edit your site with?

No, I don’t use any other devices to update my site. I have used the WordPress App on my phone, but I don’t really care for it, so I don’t use it very much (in fact, I really don’t use it at all).

Not sure what to do about the old version of Chrome …. I can’t update it, and buying a new computer just to get a new iOS seems extreme at this point.

  • Are you able to use a more recent version of Safari on that device?

Are you able to use a more recent version of Safari on that device?

Yes, I think I am using a current version of Safari, but I don’t seem to be getting much better results with it.

I am hoping there is a way to elect (in WordPress) to simply stop using the block editor, as my other blogs have not updated to the block editor and they work fine.

Do you (or does anyone) know if that is an election I can make with my newest blog?

  • Hi there,

You can switch to the classic editor by clicking on the three dots (next to the cog icon) at the top of the post or page editor and selecting “Switch to Classic Editor”.

Here is a screencast of the steps to follow: http://cld.wthms.co/tOOMQu

If your site is using one of the business themes, it will not work with the classic editor. You will need to switch to an older theme if you want to have the option to switch to the classic editor. Then, you see the three dot menu appear to change editors.

Hopefully that helps. Let me know if you have any trouble and I can take a look at it from our end.

    Thanks,

Thank you very much! That appears to have worked, and I believe it made the change permanently and not just for that specific post. I appreciate it, as this might be the simple fix I was looking for.

Ill let you know if it doesn’t work long-term.

    Sincerely.

(I have no idea how I “quoted” my own answer in that last post…haha.)
