Can't get started

Hi, have paid for a domian, have it on dreamhost; downloaded wordpress file to computor tried unzipping and it doesn’t install. Tried instant install from dreamhost but it says I already have wordpress linked to that domain ??? Have gone to wordpress.com and registered and account; now I have a blogging thing that doesn’t help me choose a theme or doesn’t ‘look’ like what I’m trying to learning on Lynda dot com. Help – what a mess – where did I go wrong? – Martin

    where did I go wrong?

    Right at the start.

There are two separate types of WordPress: WordPress.com, which is here, and where blogs start out with URLs like Whatever.Wordpress.Com; and WordPress.ORG, which is hosted elsewhere (like dreamhost) and where you have to purchase a domain.

If you’ve paid Dreamhost for hosting, then you need to forget all about WordPress.COM and go to the forums on WordPress.ORG for help. We cannot help you and they can.

Given the several reports complaining about the instructions on Lynda.com, I’m of half a mind to pitch them myself. At least in my videos there’d be no question of where your blog was.

Thanks raincoaster – its getting clearer now, will get on to wordpress.org. Think Lynda.com students would benefit from your videos – hope your pitch is successful.

Chapter 1 of the Essential Training course, and especially 1.2 “Course progression: Cloud hosting, then self-hosting” in the Essential Training course explains the course progression – WordPress.com first, then self-hosting. The difference is further explained in chapter 10 “Moving to self-hosting” which is where you need to start when you want to do self-hosting.

The course was designed to cover both platforms and cover common properties first and then specific properties for self-hosting second.

Thanks, mor10. I think maybe people are skimming; have you thought of pop quizzes?
