Can't get widgets to appear in sidebar on right like the template says you can

  Hi I’ve just using a new theme ‘Independent Publisher 2’ and it’s great apart from it says you can have an ‘optional sidebar’ with widgets, however even if I put the widgets in the sidebar when I customize, they still appear in the footer at the bottom of the page – any ideas how I can fix this to get them on the right?
