Can't have a custom domain without a plan?

I’ve been with WordPress.com for more than 10 years & remember how great a platform it was. Now I find it very unfortunate to see that WordPress.com has closed all doors for free blogging with custom domains. I know I’m just frustratingly ranting here how the platform has deteriorated. I know a ‘Happiness Engineer’ will arrive and direct me to a page so that I know what great plans they have for me.
Sadly, the blogging with WordPress.com is fun no more.
