Can’t I have ‘.wordpress.com’ as the end of my address any more?
-
I have several free sites and am in the process of setting up a new one. My existing ones all have the address ‘sitename.wordpress.com’. Now, when I try to set up my new one, I’m being offered options such as ‘sitename.travel.blog’ or ‘sitename.finance.blog’ which I don’t want. It seems if I opt for a ‘professional’ site instead of a blog, I can still get the ‘wordpress.com’ option, but have to pay for it. Is there anyway of just getting a free site with the address ‘sitename.wordpress.com’, like I’ve always had in the past? – or is this a recent change? Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy –
Type the desired site address in to your browser. If there’s an existing site with that address you’ll know because an actual site will load. If it’s available, there’s going to be a blue link near the top with the option to register the site as your own. Use that link. This is a work around. Write back if you need more help.

Hey staff-zinnia I just tried this with an unrelated account (just to make sure I don’t have any special settings on this one) and don’t see any difference from the new site creation flow at start/site.
If I try to register an available WordPressdotcom site address via the “do you want to register this site address” it dumps me in the same flow as a new site. If I choose “Blog,” I still end up with a mychosensubdomain.something.blog address rather than the wordpress.com address I tried to register. Perhaps I need to be doing something differently?

I’ve tried too and staff-zinnia’s workaround didn’t make any difference for me. If you choose “blog” which most people wanting a free site are bound to click on that is the subdomain you’re offered even if you started the “flow” (?!?) with .wordpress.com. You still need to use “Business” or “Professional” to get a .wordpress.com address.
Perhaps it’s time for an option message at step 1: If you’re aiming to create a free site do you want a .blog address or the traditional one. -
Oh no! I think y’all are right. This was still working the last time I tried it, but it no longer does.

Oh that’s disappointing – I guess there’s no way of doing it then. The new address options feel very restrictive and aren’t giving me what I want for my site. Is this a new thing?

For the moment, at least, you can start with either Professional or Business rather than Blog to obtain a .wordpress.com address. But the dotblog subdomain has many more options than the ones that typically turn up in the step where free subdomains are given. I gave a more detailed reply about this to another user here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/registering-a-new-blog-doesnt-allow-you-to-select-a-wordpress-com-ending-anymore/#post-3354956
