Can’t import Blogger xml file

I could ask, but this is from a community support forum. Based on my experience with other Blogger issues, Google will be totally non-responsive (if they monitor these forums at all). There is no direct support/help function.

  • It’s possible you might reach someone else who knows a bit more about what they’re talking about, I hope at least.

The last person was half-right about XML, that it is made to be extended. But, XML is still a standard format with required/expected data structure, which is what’s wrong with (so far as we have seen) only your site’s export file.

Well, it appears we’ve hit a wall. From what I gather in the Blogger help forum the problem is likely ‘bad code’ in one or more of my (thousands) posts, and I don’t know how I’d even begin to look for something like that or fix it to get a properly working .xml file (and don’t think I’d be very high on Google’s priority list for an engineer on their end to look into it : ) At least now I know the barriers to WP transfer, and also a little scary to think that I can’t back up my blog in a file that’s easily recoverable, even in Blogger.

Anyway, just want to say thank you again to everyone that’s been so helpful! Take care.

  • I’d maybe start by ruling out posts with embeds. If it’s broken in the export file, it’s likely broken in the post too.

Another option, if it’s available, is to maybe export only a limited months of posts, or only a specific category. Those are options with our export, I’m unsure if Blogger offers that though.

I guess the difference is, we stand by our product here and are willing to dig into fixing things like this, even with our export files when people want to leave us, but we can’t do anything about Blogger’s exporter kicking out an invalid file, as that’s all on Google’s end. :(

I see Google doesn’t offer any support from their staff, but it seems they sometimes make an appearance in the community threads. Maybe one will stop by and we’ll get lucky with this.

I’m sorry you’re running into so much trouble with this. :(

If you’d like to, you can get started here. Any import won’t affect any work you do on the site, you can import at any time.

Thank you! And also, tell all your friends about Duck Soup, I’m sure they would enjoy it. : )
