I dont think it was a self hosted WordPress Site! I followed the instructions by the way …

If that would be the case, much better if you can provide a more details like:
1) Which site did that xml file came from?
2) How big is that file?
3) Exact error message that you got when importing?Most likely we will be needing moderator help for more complicated issues like this, I have typed modlook into the sidebar tag for you so we can get staff help. What is the site to which you are trying to import? And what is the file size of the file you’re trying to import?

Okay. Our importer has a file size limit of 15MB. It is not possible to import files larger than that.
You will need to use an XML splitter app to manually split that file into smaller pieces and then you should be able to import the smaller files. You can find a tutorial on how to do that here:
