Can't insert Flickr image without it being uploaded on my media storage?
-
Hi! I’m very disappointed with a new Editor. My main issue is inserting images. I’m using my Flickr account to upload my blog images, then I use a link to insert the picture in the post. But now when I do it, the Editor says that it can’t upload the image. So instead I have to use a direct link, for example. blablabla.png from Flickr and then the media uploader does what it says on the label – it uploads the image in my media storage. And then it means eating my memory, which is default 3GB.
Is there a way, please, to fix this? I don’t have money to pay for a Premium account and its bottomless media storage, thank you.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, what’s with the “new” editor. I use my images from Flickr, Google Photos and 500px along with the ones in my media folder. I want the images to open in a new widow in full size when click (linked to URL of image). This was very easy in the previous incarnation of the editor. This one is a definite step backwards. I test software for a living and I know a bug when I see one.

Some functionality has been restored, but I would suggest they roll back the entire release. I’m guessing they think this more “mobile friendly”, the default display depicts a smart phone display. If I wanted to tweet or post short notes I would use twitter or facebook, not a blogging platform (end of rant). I did find a back door way of enabling the images to open in a new tab on the WP page. I’ll document that when I’m certain that it can be repeated.

Thank you all for responses, I hope WP support and administration can see the amount of havoc caused.
And yes, I have to use the WP admin editor again, which I like best anyway – less lags there! And the embedding function is still there. I hope this helps someone.
-
Can you walk me through the specific steps you’re taking? I’ll try to reproduce this issue, and see what we can do!

Hello, @chrisrudzki, thank you.
Well, I upload my image to Flickr and get the URL. Then in editor I click Add Media, it brings up a usual window. I click “Add via URL” and insert the link. Then there are two possible things happening:
- If I copy a link from the image’s page and insert it in the line, it doesn’t have any . png or . jpeg ending. Then I get the red “The file could not be uploaded because the file type is not supported.” message.
- I copy the link of the actual image, so it has a . png ending. But then the image is uploaded in my gallery, which obviously takes the space of my 3GB given for free. Which is not convenient.
This is it. I hope it helps. Please ask if I missed something.

Can you give me an example of such a link? You can just post the URL here. I want to be sure I’ve got this right.

Yep, this is expected behavior. You should be able to insert an image which loads directly from the image’s original source by simply pasting the image URL in your post on its own line. The URL will then transform into the image itself, and the image will display in the post editor.
-
Yes, here is the example. I won’t post my actual name on Flickr, if you don’t mind, I’ll replace it.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/blahblahblah/22439661434/in/dateposted/Fact is that in previous editor when I used this kind of link to insert an image, it worked perfectly. And didn’t take space of my WordPress gallery.
-
Have you tried locating the URL of the image itself, and simply pasting it on its own line in your post editor?

Yes, I have already explained why I don’t want to do it. It takes place in my gallery, which means at some point my memory will run out and I’ll have to buy a Premium account. Well, no. I’d so much prefer using my Flickr account.

I don’t think we’re on the same page here.
If you follow these steps below, the image will be inserted, but will be embedded from the original URL. It will not be uploaded to your media library, and won’t use up your disk space.
However, you must follow these steps:
1. Copy the URL to a specific image. For example: http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/img_0081.png
2. Open up a post in the editor, or create a new one. You can do so from here:
http://wordpress.com/post/3. Paste the URL in the visual post editor. Paste it just as if it were text that you were composing. (Don’t use the ‘add media’ button at all.)
4. Once you paste the URL, you will see the image appear in the visual post editor.
5. Finish your post, and publish it. The image will not be uploaded to your media library, and if you inspect the HTML, you’ll see the image references to the original place in which it is located.

Oh! This sounds so much better. Thank you so much! I will try it tomorrow. Thanks for bearing with me hehe.

Chris, thanks for addressing this. It does work with Flickr images, however I also have a number of Google Photos which have a very long URL.
For example this is my photo of the carrier I was on in 1970, cannot use it
USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31)
Google Photos provides a simple short link but that doesn’t work either.
-
Chris, Google Photos provides a shareable link for the photos that you can embed in facebook posts, twitter and Google+. It would be wonderful if it would work on the new editor.
Here is the short link for the carrier photo I posted earlier. It would make my posting experience better if I could just drop it in

Another feature I would like to see that is available via the WP Admin page is the ability to open the photo in a new tab or window.

@ toffy346: you’re very welcome! :) I think you’ll find it nice and easy to use!
@poltraxx: Google is assigning a fairly strange URL to their photos now, and I suspect it’s to dissuade users from hotlinking to them. I recommend that you consider uploading the images to your WordPress.com media library, and inserting them from there.
Otherwise, you can try switching to the HTML post/page editor, and use a little HTML like the following:
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/q_NgKKKk5Ot6YN59IT_HmLALvjTUiREu_IFp32WsnjJll2SkBkc7VNMAsx4Dc6avTYqhm6VjhGE8hTNsXrEtHpq3AbrQcpNGJS1LAa7OOjRIQrjzr4q-_QsveQrfVMDN7SsYxoY2dWryAMRJ4gjJWai8xBz6l1H6fhyPk2Gv19WqOIPB2kb5JzDC-yvbUldgjr8FZQpPngRp9PV_AxGEWGP8JP8eDzXHMLY8Z4BmDLNKwn8d7zIkTzACDcfN7MxKLxtKTBoBQEsI_TyBVT1fb_K0DKWnmasU2zUPnE1fwRhjTWuFuTGvEr0pgYZR4vcGD8l-xmcJxkM8ez2NQtTY27E9rIhH24Q9GcuF_FcAMsizpvLnW9vz1YjFyv8ZmtPECizYoyA16DiB35grB8kpIt6ax-j6WjnJ9RMFo3Sls_SRSIGHDIJSwbyCnTNFXdY8meD3RSQH8V7KiCfEJnws45z0mQ45MtbS6-2DDbl8Xwd6PvZy4egkWCGah3G831TgXVoCCveEwuPBFPcw0el-TlQvkqibfE5-38DggQ-psFC1=w2078-h1384-no" /> -
@chrisrudzki thanks for the html snippet, works fine. I do like that you can drop a link to Facebook, Google+ and Flickr into the editor and the image is displayed, however that does not work with Google photos. They are still in another world.
I only use that ridiculous URL because I couldn’t get the short HTML to work, but I was attempting a <href reference, maybe the <img src= will work, I’ll give it a try.
is there a HTML trick to get the image to display in another window?
BTW thanks for your quick response to our questions. I love this blogging platform.

The good news is that we’re always making updates, so hopefully we can make an update for Google Photos users sooner than later!
As for opening pages or images in new windows, you could use something like the following HTML:
<a href="http://my_website/my_image_full_size.jpg" target="_blank"> <img src="http://my_website/my_image_smaller_size.jpg" /> </a>That will display a smaller version of your image — maybe a thumbnail — that will open a larger version in a new window or tab when it’s clicked. (Whether it’s a window or a tab depends on the user’s browser settings.)
If you want, you could also replace that second line with text. That’d create a conventional text link, which would open the image in a new window/tab when clicked.
Thanks for your kind words about WordPress! I’m happy to help, and do let me know if I can help any further. :)

Hello. I’m here with the update on the situation.
Thanks so much for the tip, Chris, the direct inserting of the link in the post actually works. Fun. The only problem for now that I’ve encountered is that I can’t center the image. I click on it, then center – nothing happens. Is there a way to make it centered, please? -
