Can’t launch

  • Unknown's avatar

Every time I try to launch the site, I am directed to the purchasing with an annual fee, free for the first year, but I am required to enter my credit card details.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

After clicking Launch, on the domains screen, select Skip Purchase at the bottom.

Next on the plans page, select the free plan at the top – it’s a link above the table comparing the paid plans. Then you won’t be required to pay.

Where is the link above the table? Do you have a picture?

I have done all of that. I have published a post, an about me page and contact page but I when I click the “launch site button it sends me to the Step 1 of 2, closing a domain name then when I click “choose my domain later” to get around that step I am on Step 2 of 2 … choosing which plan I want to pay for.

I want a free plan and followed the “free” link when I set up the blog with blog title, blog name.wordpress.org

  • Hi @slacker70 I can confirm you have launched https://connectingtheoldandwise.wordpress.com/ and it is now visible to the public.

    That is NOT my website

I forget the exact “flow” but it takes seconds and a couple of clicks to achieve what you want. Don’t “choose domain later”. Type a random word in the Domain box and scroll to the very bottom of the page where you should see your free address. Click “skip purchase” and/or “continue with free”. It’s something like that.

when I do that, it send me to the next page “Choose the right plan for you” and giving me two payment options.

I didn’t want to but I’ve just created another free site. That makes 20 even though I only use two. It took me seconds. At choose the right plan for you” there is a free option in small print near the top.

  • Unknown's avatar

I used that link from the very start. So if you have 20 free sites, do you have them downloaded to a personal server host? Or do you just set them up, post, hit publish and then the launch button?

When I hit the launch button it sends me to what I described here earlier?

  • Unknown's avatar

I reluctantly created 18 extra free sites to help people such as yourself that couldn’t find the “continue with free button” and to remind myself how it worked. WordPress.com keep tinkering with how you launch a site and don’t make it too obvious because naturally they’d prefer you to give them some money but launching a free site really is quite easy if you look carefully at the options.

Like I said in the answer to your previous post … I FOUND the “continue with free button” WHEN I set up the site. I have looked at every option to launch this stupid site. I use to have 100’s of WP sites many years ago with affiliate marketing so I know the difference between server host, free sites etc.

    Except this will not launch.

Are you saying it will take a while before WordPress launched my free site without paying them?

Otherwise I will delete the site, my WP account and do something else. It’s not that important.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK. I’ve just created another free site called slacker791984154.wordpress.com
After the launch button all I did was scroll to the bottom of the page and clicked on “skip purchase” against the free address and “continue with free” when it offers two paid plans so I’m not sure why you’re not getting any joy?!?

  • Unknown's avatar

Perhaps you just need to log out and log back in again or refresh your browser to “clear” whatever settings are messed up??

  • Unknown's avatar

That is an idea I have not thought of trying. Thanks

I can’t believe it after all this time and trouble. Before logging out I thought I’d try to launch one more time. I got the same screen as before and clicked “skip purchase”… on the next page down below was “continue with free”.

Unlike prior attempts the page starts to load then tells me my site has been launched.

Before after clicking “continue with free”, it would not move to another page or even refresh itself or load my site.

Thanks for your help … something in the background finally become unclogged for it to work. I knew it wasn’t that hard but nothing was working.

    Thanks again.

  • @slacker70 apologies for looking in the wrong place, I can confirm that you have successfully launched retiredlaziness.wordpress.com

Before logging out I thought I’d try to launch one more time. I got the same screen as before and clicked “skip purchase”… on the next page down below was “continue with free”.

Our team is aware that there is an intermittent issue here and is working on a fix. Glad you were able to successfully launch your site but if you have any further issues please let us know!

Thanks for letting me know there was an intermittent issue. I thought I was going crazy for second. LOL
