Can’t launch for free
-
Hello,
I’ve spent a few weeks building my website and now I’m ready to launch. I’m trying to launch a free website with the WordPress domain but I keep being asked to choose a paid plan with no free option. I made another website as a test and launched it and this seemed to work fine. Can someone help me to figure out what’s going on here? ThanksWP.com: Yes

Hi there, did you perhaps try out one of your theme Styles?
https://wordpress.com/support/using-styles/
https://wordpress.com/support/using-styles/style-variations/
That would require upgrading to at least the Premium plan (or the CSS Add-on).
-
Ah yes that’s probably it – I used the ‘styles’ section to create some custom background and text colours. Is there a way I can change the colours without having to upgrade?
-
Hello again, There are two ways to do this,
- Upgrade to the Premium plan which has a ton of additional features like a free domain registration for the first year (you’ll pay for the renewal separately from the second year onward), more storage space, more upload types (audio, video), more theme choices, more support, more stats and more more.
- Purchase the annually renewable CSS Add-on which should allow you to use Styles, but doesn’t come with the other features available in the Premium plan.
As long as you renew either option, the Styles will continue working.

Hello @amberefs, thank you for informing us about this.
We’ve set your site to private, but you can now make it public from the Settings page using this link:
https://wordpress.com/sites/settings/site/untangleandtend.wordpress.com
Since your site contains Premium Styles, you’ll have the option to remove them, or if you’d prefer to keep them, you can upgrade your site to the Premium Plan or higher by following this guide:
https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/upgrade-your-plan/
Please let us know if you have any questions or need any extra help, and we’ll be happy to assist you. -
Hey @elcristofue even though it appears that the OP deleted their above site, I still want to confirm something then. Are you saying that it is possible to launch a site with Styles activated only by purchasing the Premium upgrade and not the CSS Add-on? Thanks.
And @amberefs Addresses of deleted WPcom websites can’t be reused. If you decide that you really do want to use that site address, you can reinstate a deleted WordPress.com website within 30 days of deletion by following this guide. https://wordpress.com/support/delete-site/#restore-a-deleted-site

Hi @suvimbo,
It looks like you were using the AI Website Builder. This tool allows you to build a site for free (up to 30 prompts) but an upgrade to paid plan is needed to publish the site.
You can check the pricing options and Hosting plan details here:

Let me know if that helps or if you have any other question. -
Hi @justjennifer, — great question!
Correct, Styles require an eligible plan to be active. The CSS add-on allows you to add additional code or CSS to blocks. However, for Global visual design adjustments like fonts, colors, and layout presets (via Styles), those features are bundled into the paid plans.
For lower plans, those changes can be made manually on the templates, pages, or specific blocks.
Here is more info on what can be done with CSS add-ons: Custom CSS, and here are more details on the Styles feature: Style your siteLet me know if that makes sense.

Hi @suvimbo,
Thank you for reaching out to us.
I understand that you’d like to update your site title. Since I’ll need to ask a few questions that are better handled privately, I’ll be sending a follow-up email to your registered email address on file. I recommend replying directly to that email moving forward.
If you have any other questions, feel free to include them in your reply and I’ll be happy to help!
