Can’t like posts on other blogs

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve seen this issue a number of times on the Forum, but besides suggestions on fixing one’s browser, it doesn’t really seem to get resolved. My problem started last night: when I tried to ‘like’ a friend’s post on her blog, I saw a blank pop up window, but my avatar didn’t appear next to her ‘Like’ button.

    Weekly Wisdom 13 August

I was able to click the Like star when viewing the post in the Reader. But when I went back to the actual page, it didn’t seem to recognize me. Oddly, I can leave comments on other blog posts. Just not any ‘likes.’

I’m using Chrome on a Windows 7 Pro laptop. (Computer is working fine, no problems.) I cleared the cache, updated Chrome, and disabled all of the extensions. Third party cookies from WordPress are enabled. I signed out of WordPress and logged back in. I’ve had no problems with updating or editing my blog; I haven’t tested the Like button there, but I don’t normally like my own posts. Has there been any attempt during the recent changes to WordPress to address this issue, which other users also seem to have trouble with?

    Hi @hangakugozen

    Please follow below steps:
    Click on My Site
Click on Sharing under configure. A page will appear.
Then click on the sharing Button. Down on that page, you’ll see Edit Sharing Buttons.
Under this section on the right side check the box beside Show Like Button

It should work. Best Luck. Thanks

The Like button still doesn’t work for me, on my blog or anyone else’s that I have read.

I still get that mysterious pop up window when I click a Like button, on any WordPress blog. But my Like doesn’t show up.

Anything else I can try? This isn’t about my blog so much as my being able to interact with other blogger’s posts.

Thank you, by the way. :)

    Hi
I add modlook tag for staff intervention.

  • Hi there,

Have you tried logging into a different browser and liking posts? Do you still get the same pop-up window response? I want to eliminate it being simply a browser issue.

Hi, I just logged in using my Macbook with Safari. I was able to like posts there with no sign of the pop up window.

I just updated to Chrome Version 84.0.4147.125 (Official Build) (64-bit). It didn’t help. Also cleared cache again and made sure all extensions were disabled. I logged out of WordPress and signed back in again, and have refreshed the browser repeatedly. I don’t know what happened, since everything was working fine Tuesday August 11. The issue suddenly came up yesterday.

Thanks for looking into this. I consider myself fairly experienced at using WordPress, but this has me gobsmacked.

  • Hi there,

Well, I am going to do some testing on my end and see if I can replicate the issue. We at least know that it is a Chrome issue, possibly a Windows 7/Chrome issue. I will check and get back with you. Please let me know if you discover anything on your end as well.

    Thanks,

Thank you! The Windows 7 computer has been my workhorse; it’s hooked up to a fairly elaborate work station with a 22″ monitor and wireless keyboard to accommodate my vision problems. I would switch completely to the Macbook, but it’s incompatible with my current hardware and replacing everything would be very expensive.

I have heard that Chrome is becoming increasingly less friendly to WordPress, so I may try switching to another browser. But anything you find out would be useful, since changing my current setup would be a major chore. Thanks again.

  • Is there any improvement if you allow third-party cookies in Chrome?

  • Unknown's avatar

Sadly, no. I actually put in Chrome a specific allowance for WordPress.com cookies, but the no-likes problem continues. Thanks for asking.

  • Hm, try adding an exception also for wp.com

  • Unknown's avatar

Did that as well, still no luck. I’m wondering if the last update “broke” Chrome, at least on my computer. Thanks for your suggestions, I appreciate the help: though it looks like I may have to switch to Safari or Firefox.

  • Hi there,

If you like Chrome, you can try a couple of other browsers based on the same source (Chromium). Brave and Opera are two of the most well known.

Thanks, I’ll check those out. I’m a little disappointed Chrome has been giving me so many problems lately. It was always a reliable, fast browser, and I liked how easy it was to use. Not so much now, though.
