Can’t link blog post categories to category-specific pages

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m setting up a website with five categories of word puzzle. On my home page, I have a Blog Post block that shows each new post with a title and category. I created custom pages for each category of puzzle, and those appear in the navigation pane of the header. When I click on a category of puzzle, I’m taken to the custom page for that specific category. So far so good. However, when I click on a category under a post on the home page, I’m taken to a page that shows all categories of puzzles, a kind of archive. Is there a way to connect the category links under individual posts to the category specific pages? I’m using the RecipeBox template.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi @jadbreen,

I understand that you’d like users to be redirected to your custom category page when they click on the category label under a specific post. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible—category links (such as those shown in the Blog Posts block on your homepage) automatically lead to the default category archive page, which is generated by WordPress and can’t be changed or redirected through the editor or template settings.

As a workaround, you can manually add links within each post that point to your custom category pages. To avoid confusion for your visitors, you might also consider hiding the default category labels beneath posts using CSS.

Please note that WordPress.com doesn’t offer direct support for writing or editing CSS. However, you can learn more through our About CSS guide. If you’d like professional help, we recommend hiring a WordPress expert from the freelancer network Codeable.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you. A couple of additional questions.

    1. On the individual post pages, there’s a date and a category. Currently, clicking on the category link takes one to the archive page. Can that link be changed such that it takes one to the custom category page instead?
      • If it can’t be changed, can it be removed so that I can manually insert a link as you note?
    2. The About CSS guide you mentioned isn’t hyperlinked.

    Hi @jadbreen,

You’re very welcome! Regarding your other questions, please see the details below:

It’s not possible to change the category link so it redirects to a custom page instead of the default archive page—unless you use a plugin. Since your plan supports plugins, we recommend trying the Redirection plugin. Before installing any third-party plugin, please be sure to review the developer’s documentation, as we don’t provide direct support for these.

Alternatively, you can hide the category links using CSS. From what I can see on your site, it looks like you’ve already successfully done this. For more guidance on working with CSS, here’s our official guide: Editing CSS on WordPress.com

Lastly, since you’re on a paid plan, you have access to 24/7 priority support from our Happiness Engineers. For future inquiries—especially if they involve sensitive information—we recommend using our private support channel: Contact Support
