can’t list sub-categories individually under categories

i maintain a blog for my favourite links. i created two drop-down categories (web design and art), but the problem is i can’t edit which sub-categories are listed under which category. in other words, both the categories are currently listing ALL subcategories.
PLEASE tell me how i can choose only appropriate subcategories to go under appropriate categories.
