Can't Load Social Media Buttons
-
I can’t load social media buttons so people can contact me. I’ve tried both ways to simply capture and use them so I can proceed with the code and it isn’t working out.
A responder said I had sharing buttons at the bottom of the post that I could use. I tried to save them. They are .htm files that show up as blank thumbnails in My Pictures. They can’t be loaded to the Media Library.
She suggested getting an image editing application so I could take a set of social media icons and use that to isolate the buttons for Twitter, Google+, etc. I have downloaded Picasa and it can’t open the social media flat image I saved, nor can it open a 1440×400 starry, starry night image I save yesterday. They do not show up in the Picasa display. I have even imported them, where they were shown, but I cannot find them anywhere now. I asked it for the imported files and it shows none.
I want some social connectivity on my site and it seems this simple task is not doable by me at this time. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Define “Both ways.” It sounds like you’re not sure if you’re talking about buttons that enable people to share your posts or buttons which connect people to your accounts.
If what you want is the former, here http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/
If what you want is the latter, some themes have social buttons built in and some require you to configure them in HTML code.

I thought I was clear. Most of my query delineates both ways. I want the latter. I understand my theme is not particularly amenable to connecting people to my accounts. I know that I will have to configure the buttons in HTML.
I am telling you I cannot load “sharing” buttons at the bottom of posts to the Media Library to be used for connecting. They are not gif, png, or jpeg files. That’s one way.
The other way: find social media icons on internet. Save them. Get image editing software to isolate or individuate particular buttons like Twitter, Google+ etc. since they all come in sets. I can’t find a Twitter button alone, for instance. I can’t begin to work with those files to be able to load them in the Library, so I can’t even start to get to the point where I must use the coding.
I got Picasa. It won’t load/can’t open the social media icons set file or the starry starry night file I saved yesterday. Picasa cannot work with those files and I don’t know why. I imported them, saw them, but cannot find them now.
I want readers who look at my site to be able to contact me via Twitter, Google+, and email. -
I appreciate the help here. Raincoaster has helped and I hope I didn’t offend I was just frustrated. I believe it was time thief who told me about the two ways to acquire connect buttons as part of social tools. She said I could grab my sharing buttons. They do not load into the Media Library; they are not the right kind of file.
So I looked for social media icon sets. I found them. I saved them. They are all sets. I downloaded Picasa to be able to edit images; to isolate individual buttons to be used for connecting. Picasa can’t open these files. I don’t understand it, and I don’t understand why grabbing social media connecting buttons should be the most difficult thing about managing/building a website, which it is proving to be to me.
Does anyone know how I can make this work. I’m all geared up. If I can get them in the Library I will use the code in the text widget. I know that’s what I have to do. -
I got the buttons! I’m proud of that work. Here’s the problem now: I need images for my theme that are 1440×400 pixels for the featured image. When I tell Google Images to find that size I get many photos all at that size, and often several of the same photos no matter the content requested. When I add media to the Library invariably they are not 1440×400 and are much smaller.
My pictures look bad because they’re blown up and I can’t find the right-sized ones.
Thank you. -

that policy and presumed (yes) that they were in the public domain. Many I’ve chosen from or viewed are on multiple sites. Also, I have no way to create images this size. Further, there are instructions all over the ‘net about how to search for images of a certain size. Call me naive, but it did not occur to me that this is wrong or that I was doing anything nefarious. I stay away from images that appear to be part of advertisements; that’s been one guide I’ve adhered to.

How do you know they were in the public domain? An Advanced Search of Google images can narrow it down to public domain or CC licensed images, but the selection is limited.
If you do not use public domain or CC licensed images, yes, what you are doing is illegal. That it is common does not negate that fact.

My advice is to use an Advanced Search on Flickr. That lets you choose only CC licensed images, and it works very well. And Flickr images tend to be large and high-quality.
