Can’t Log In To Other WordPress Blogs

I’ve tried over and over again to log in to websites that require WordPress usernames and passwords in order to post comments (namely http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/ among others). Every time, I get rejected with the message “ERROR: Invalid username.” When I press the link to register, it leads me to a 404 Error page.

I’ve tried this on both Firefox and Internet Explorer, garnering the same results.

Yet I have no difficulty logging in here on my Dashboard and on these forums.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Can anyone tell me how I can use my WordPress username and password to log into a website asking for my WordPress username and password, since apparently I’m missing a secret step that others have managed to figure out?

Please forgive me if I sound agitated – this is a persistent problem that has caused me no end of frustration over the last few years I’ve run up against it. Thank you ahead of time for your help!

an anyone tell me how I can use my WordPress username and password to log into a website asking for my WordPress username and password,

You can’t. You can only log in if the blogger in question issues you with the login details.

http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/ is not a wordpress.COM blog. It is a self-hosted blog and they are in no way connected to wordpress.COM.

At self-hosted wordpress blogs that require you to register to leave a comment, that is what you will have to do. Register with them. Each blog is separate, so you will have to register separately on any self-hosted blogs you want to comment on.

Personally, with this growing trend where sites require you to register to comment, I simply have quit commenting on them rather than have to keep track of dozens of usernames and passwords.

Except when I clicked on the – bighollywod – link above while logged in and then on a Post and went to the bottom, there was a comment box waiting for me with my log-in name and posting nickname there on the site from WordPress.COM!! Way Kool?? or what??

There was a link to my profile which took me here: http://intensedebate.com/user-dashboard – and in the bottom “An Automattic Production” Member since June 15 2010 (1 week) – – and no I did not register anywhere except at WordPress.COM.

I guess another “feature” or something.

Who said that big brother is not out to get us?

    Feel safer now?

Whoa! They are doing that through IntenseDebate, which is owned by Automattic. That is quite cool.

@mysterycyle, if you are logged in here at wordpress.COM, you should be able to leave comments on bighollywood. Other sites though might not be set up that way though.

I don’t like the automatic opt in feature.

Well at least it is all in the Automattic family. If it were Facebook I’d be far more worried.

I had no idea that this was even possible actually.

@mysterycycle-That site uses IntenseDebate. Have you tried creating an account there? http://intensedebate.com/home (and I see you’ve had this problem for a long, long time)

@auxclass @tsp – It’s the universal user profile at work! If the site you are visiting is using IntenseDebate, and you are logged in here or leave a comment with an email linked to your WP.COM account, your Gravatar and a “W” will appear. http://intensedebate.com/logmein

    @bilalamjad2 – whut?

bilalamjad2 is backlink hunting wanting links from the .COM forums to get traffic.
