Can't "Log out" of WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to check out my site due to a reader reporting a problem. I want to see it as a regular user, not as the administrator. I click logout and go to the site, but it is still the administrator’s view with options to customize, etc.

The system know I’s logged out because I have to login in again to view my stats but I can’t see the site as a regular user.

    HELP.

    The site is cliffswinepicks.com

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @cbbrown3, right now you’re logged in as the administrator and owner of the site.

If you go to https://wordpress.com/me/account and click log out there, then refresh the page, are you still able to access stats?

Also, what browser or device are you using?

I log out and bring up my blog.

I still have a “header” above the main blog data that has:
“My site” and “Reader” on the left and “Write” my gravitar and the bell for messages on the right. This should not be there when I am not signed in as the administrator.

The bottom of the page has “Customize …” on the right side.

The system knows I am signed out because if I click on any of the “controls” I mentioned, it wants me to log in. If I view a few pages and later check my stats, they don’t go up, I assume WP thinks I am still logged in as the admin, even though I am not.

I am using Chrome (current version) on a Windows PC.

  • Hi there,

You can open your site in an incognito browser window to see it as a logged out user.

If this doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

I’m having the same problem with my two different sites on two different accounts.

Also using Chrome on a Chromebook.

    Hi jocaracing,

Please start a new thread for your question and tag it with modlook so we can look at your account there — please also confirm the addresses of the sites you are having trouble with.

    Thanks!

    This is still NOT working.

    Here is what is happening:

    I log in as usual.

I do what I need to do and save all work. I go to my site and get the site with the admin bar on the top. I click my gravitar and the page https://wordpress.com/me comes up. I click Log Out.

The generic WordPress page comes up – https://wordpress.com/?apppromo

I go to my site, cliffswinepicks.com and expect to see the user page without the “admin bar” bu the admin bar with “My Site” and “Reader” on the left and “Write” my gravitar and the announcement bell on the right side of the bar comes up.

I hit refresh and the page refreshes and appears exactly the same.

If I click on one of the controls, WP realizes I am not logged in and brings up the log in screen. If I ignore this and just go back to my site, I still have the admin bar at the top of my blog.

If I visit pages on my site and later check stats, none of the clicks appear in the counts because WP thinks I am still logged in as the admin.

    I need help.

It sounds like WP knows you’re logged out, but for some reason the browser rendering your page does not.

Can you let us know whether you’re using any extensions that could be caching that page further? If you close the browser, or even restart the Chromebook, then open it again without logging in, does the admin bar still show up?

What if you open the site in an incognito window?
