Can't move domain from WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi folks

We are leaving WordPress.com and have created a new website using WordPress over on Siteground. However, after changing the DNS to point to Siteground and removing the site on wordpress the domain still points to WordPress.com which is extremely confusing.

We desperately need to decouple the domain from wordpress.com so we can use our new website!

What is weird is that initially, and on some browsers, it worked but now it keeps reverting to wordpress.com

    Thanks

    Julian

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

(BTW it’s not that the domain still points to WordPress.com, it’s just that WordPress.com just doesn’t seem to be able to drop it’s mapping and somehow people still end up on WordPress.com instead of Siteground)

The domain portsmouthmusicclub.org.uk is registered with spacereg

    and is pointing to

    ns1.uk16.siteground.eu
    ns2.uk16.siteground.eu

I can also see there’s a linked blog, which I can’t remove. Perhaps that’s the problem? Can you remove it?

    This is all very confusing.

I have managed to delete the site on WordPress.com

    and still it won’t redirect

Do I just have to wait?

    When I type in portsmouthmusicclub.org.uk

    it goes to

    https://en.wordpress.com/typo/?subdomain=portsmouthmusicclub

How is this even possible when the registrar is pointing at Siteground?

And what’s with the subdomain thing?

  • Hi there,

Your site on WordPress.com has nothing to do with this. We have no control over your domain – we lost that the moment you changed the name servers.

But there are two facts about name server changes that are at play here. First, it’s not instant. It can take as long as 72 hours for name server changes to complete before your domain will show the new site. In this case, the process appears to have completed.

Second, your browser keeps it’s own internal record of where domains point in the cache so it doesn’t have to go look up that information every time you load a particular domain. That cache might not have updated yet, so your browser doesn’t yet know that the domain is no longer pointing to the site on WordPress.com. Clearing your browser cache should fix that.
