Can't move website to private server successfully
-
Dear WordPress support team,
I’m building a website with wordpress.com. I’m working really hard on it. It’s now time to move my blog to a private server. I tried multiple times your export option(http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/)(XML/WXR method). Sadly, it doesn’t work… at all. It import some random stuff, no images, no blog structure… nothing is right and everything is done partially. I’ve read a lot of forum post and nothing helps.
On my server, everything is alright. It is not my first manual installation of wordpress. It is not also my first moving of a wordpress website. In fact, I usually build my website locally and then move everything on the server when ready. So no, it is not my wordpress installation that is faulty(I tried your method multiple times, believe me).
I’ve found out that you offer a paid service for this kind of move. But since I can do it myself, I don’t see why I should pay. When I tried your wordpress service I verified if I was able to easily move my work if I need to but now I’m facing the situation where I can’t successfully move my blog.
Is it possible for you, please, to send me a backup of my blog(db, images, template files, well everything). Maybe a dropbox link or whatever the way you usually use.
I would be very happy to be able to move my blog and not have to rebuild everything.
Thanks you for your hard work on this CMS, it’s a great tool!
Have a nice day.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just to be clear, you created a free blog on WordPress.com and now you want to go self-hosted?
If you are moving to a self-hosted blog using the WordPress.org software, you first need to obtain appropriate web hosting and have your WordPress.org blog/site up and running before transferring your content. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
Have you installed the WordPress.org software on your own self-hosted domain and uploaded a theme and all the plugins you want to use? You will have to do that first.
You cannot move your WordPess.com blog onto a self-hosted domain in entirety. All you can export is the content. You cannot export your theme or the underlying files of your blog as WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and different platforms: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

For help on setting things up on the WP.org side, please consult the support pages and forum over there: http://wordpress.org/support/

Yes.

As my first post stated it: yes. And everything is working fine.
All you can export is the content
This is also all right with me.
My problem is that when I use the ‘Import/Export’ option, importation doesn’t work as expected: partial/random post, partial/random images importation, images are no more attached to post. I’m not the only one with this problem. A simple search on google and the forum prove this.
I’m looking for a solution that doesn’t involve restarting from zero or paying for a ‘Guided Transfers’. I know you(wordpress.com) don’t provide SQL file and a backup of media files but this look to be the easiest way to overcome the mystery of the ‘import/export’ script. Maybe I did something wrong or missed a detail. I’ve read a lot of post on this forum, tried a lot of things but I’m always facing the same issue: not all the posts are imported, not all the medias are imported and medias are no more attached to posts.
Sorry if my forum post give the impression that I’m rude, english is not my first language but I’m working hard on it :D.
Big thank to you for the helps you can provide.

Have you tried posting your question in the WordPress.org forum? On this forum we can really only help you with the .com side of things. For help with the intricacies of .org you’ll have to post over there.
Sorry if my forum post give the impression that I’m rude
You don’t give that impression at all. No need to worry.
I’ll tag this thread for staff in case there’s something they can do this side to help. Please be patient while waiting for a response for them.

Is this for the site aagiguere.wordpress.com? If so, I just tested the export file and ran into no issues. Having said that, I’ve generated a new export file and will be sending it via email.

Dear jackiedana Happiness Engineer (nice job title),
Thank you for your help. The file you send me is the same as the one I downloaded myself on my backend. Anyway, I almost solve the problem. Here is what I did :
Note : I’m working locally on my pc(using xampp) because it is worse on my self-hosted space. I will upload everything when ready. Also note that I used the script you send me.
1. Use the script for the first time. Note that the option to download media files was selected.
Result : Posts were imported partially. Images were also imported partially.
2. Use the script again. Note that the option to download media files was NOT selected.
Result : Missing posts were imported
3. Use the script again. Note that the option to download media files was selected.
Result : More images were imported but a lot of them were still missing.
4. Use the script again. Note that the option to download media files was selected.
Result : More images were imported and I think everythings was there.
5. After running the same script 4 times I normalized my menu because it was also imported 4 times.
6. Everythings was there(images and posts) but, no image appeared in any post. I solved the problem by manually exporting my database, edit the file and then search and replace all URL by the one of my local installation. Finally I erased my wordpress installation database so I can reimport the new one.
7. I then verified again that everything was there so I can declare this adventure a success. Result : 24(on more than 300) images are no more appearing in my post. At this point, I will not search for an automated solution. I will correct this situation manually.Tips : Be patient and wait for the server to give a sign of completion. I waited forever before receiving responses from the server.(I don’t have a super fast connection)
Conclusion : I will keep my wordpress.com blog until I fully complete the transfer. I think I’m currently done with the script.
After this, I suppose, but don’t claim I’m totally right, that the script is perfect for small amount of images transfert. I transfer more than 700mb of images so maybe the server timed out before completing the task. Maybe it can be a good idea to offer the transfer as two packages to download : one script for posts and another pre-prepared zipped files with medias in it. And why not a way to change image url in posts accordingly to the new location without having to manually modify the database.
I hope my feedback will help others.
Thank you @jackiedana and @kokkieh for your time and help, it was really appreciated.

I’m very sorry you’re running into these issues.
(I don’t have a super fast connection)

It is very possible that you are experiencing timeouts before the export process is completed. Keep in mind, however, that your actual image files are not included in the export; the issue is that as you try to import the content, the importer is grabbing the attachment file links and downloading the images at that time. On a slow or spotty connection, it may very well timeout and require multiple attempts.
The best thing I can recommend is that you try to find a faster connection to complete this process.
