can’t open e-mail account

I am having trouble accessing my e-mail account at reg.com. I just noticed that I can have an e-mail account with wordpress. Right now I want to do whatever is easiest. My e-mail at reg.com cost only $14.95 per year so it’s not a great loss.
After being on the phone all day with support at reg.com and several e-mails this
is what reg.com advised me to do:

“If you have changed your DNS Server information and still wish to use your Register.com email account, please contact your Hosting Company (wordpress.com) and ask them to enter the following in your domain name’s Zone file:

    In C Name:
    mail.mynameisroxie.com points to webmail.register.com

    In MX:
    mynameisroxie.com Priority: High mxmail.register.com

Can wordpress do this for me or is this straightforward.

Yesterday my site was down because I reset the my settings to default by mistake when I was trying to fix my e-mail account by myself at reg.com
My site is up again – but I don’t want to do something that will make my site inaccessible again

    Thank you

Sounds like you have a self-hosted site. If that is the case, you’re in the wrong forum. Head over to http://wordpress.org/support

My site is a wordpress.com site without wordpress in it. I’ve registered my site at register.com. I thought if I’m using wordpress.com – wordpress.org wouldn’t be applicable.

I also noticed in domain mapping (they give you meticulous instructions re setting up a google e-mail account – which will be redirected my site) that if I have a custom url wordpress won’t support it. Does that mean that because I have my site registered at reg.com I can’t have a gmail account that will be redirect to my site at wordpress

WordPress.com’s domain name upgrade only works for the domain name. There is no mailserver at WP.com, so they won’t be able to do webmail for you here. The gmail thing is independent; I think because you have a “ghost” email account through reg.com you won’t be able to force that mail to go to gmail.

I would ask staff on Monday, but it seems to me you’ll have to disable the reg.com email forwarding and account altogether and set it up with gmail instead. Don’t change anything until you talk to staff, though.

  • The only way to use email with a mapped domain name is through Google Apps.

Email and a blog on the same domain
