can’t password protect my blog/add users
-
Hello,
Desperation! I try and try but it doesn’t work:
I’d like to password protect my whole blog for just give access to my close friends.
I can add one or two users but not more! Why?
And/but i can’t log in with the new user names. Where can I change/give the password for the new users? Please help!
Kind regards, Jan -
I took a look at the FAQs and also saw the link raincoaster suggests. I’m building a blog for family members only, and in the “privacy” section of “settings” checked “I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose.”
For those who wonder why on earth I would want a blog that is inaccessible to most of the world, it’s because this is intended to be a private blog/archive for members of my family, who are scattered all over the world.
Checking “I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose” offers a box for a new username, but that’s all. I gather that anyone who is to be added must have a wordpress account already. Is that their WP username? Or one that I assign?
Call me thick, if you like, but just how this works is pretty opaque to me. Do I contact those I want to include and get them to sign up, and only then add them to the users? Or do they get an invitation from WP urging them to sign up?
How does this work? Can anyone explain? I’d be most grateful.

In order to be visible to designated users only, the users must have or sign up for a WordPress acccount.
Under Users (next to Settings) you can invite people by email, giving them the lowest role possible, as Contributor. That way they too can write post on the blog. For a family that would be nice, I suppose.
The other option is to use the 2nd Privacy option, leaving the blog open, but inaccessible by search engines, meaning that you can only find the blog by typing in the URL directly, but it will never show up in Google searches.
In addition to this you can also password protect individual posts and pages

Thanks, wpvstp. Appreciate the super-swift response. I went for option 1 and have added 5 people. But I’m still not clear how this works. Do they get an email invitation? Once they sign up for a WP account, are they automatically added to the list or do I have to do something further to let them in?

Yes, they will get an eamil to the email address you sent the invites to. If they don’t already have a WordPress account, they will be given a link to sign up. Once they sign up, they will appear as Users on your dashboard. When they log in to wordpress.com, they will see the same dashboard that you do, but with less choices, since all they can do is write posts. Read more here:

Ok, thank you wpvstp for the quick reply! And thank you dandare51 for making my question even more precise! I was hoping I could just give a name an a password and everyone who knows this gets access to the blog … I don’t want my visitors to do posts and want them to get easy access, so I think the version with inaccessibility for search engines will do.
Thank you! -
Done and dusted. So now it’s up to the relatives to do the rest. Thank you so much, wpvstp. I owe you a beer.
