Can't post in comments section of local news site.

  • Unknown's avatar

My local news site made me sign up with you to post in their comments section. If I make a comment I then have to close my browser and run my system cleaner if I want to make another comment. This is every time!

This morning nothing happens! I go to the trouble of writing out my comment, fill in all the details about me for you people, and when I hit the button to post, my comment just disappears….

What is the problem? It shouldn’t be this hard just to post a comment!

    Hi,

If I make a comment I then have to close my browser and run my system cleaner if I want to make another comment. This is every time!

Have you tried just refreshing the page?

This morning nothing happens! I go to the trouble of writing out my comment, fill in all the details about me for you people, and when I hit the button to post, my comment just disappears….

The commenting process that you encounter at the news site is not due to any WordPress.com intervention or requirements. It is a result of the options chosen by the administrator(s) of the news site at their Discussion Settings page. See the Discussion Settings support page.

The results you’ve described might be a result of the news site administrator(s) checking the following boxes in the options at Discussion Settings:

    1. Comment author must fill out name and e-mail – When this setting is on, anyone leaving a comment will be forced to leave a name and a valid email address. If the setting is off, visitors can leave anonymous comments. Note: While your commenters do not have to fill in the email field if you’ve turned this setting off, it will still be visible to them when they comment.
    2. Users must be registered and logged in to comment – If this box is checked, only logged in WordPress.com users will be allowed to leave comments. If it is not checked, any visitor can leave a comment.

and choosing the first of the following “Before a comment appears” settings:

    1. If the first setting is checked, all comments will go into moderation and they will need to be approved by an administrator before appearing on the blog.
    2. If the second option is checked, any visitors that have had a comment approved on the blog in the past will get a free pass through approval and only comments from new visitors will go into moderation.

The two “Before a comment appears” options at Discussion Settings are:

    • Comment must be manually approved
    • Comment author must have a previously approved comment

No, I think there is a problem with your platform. I have commented on the site for a very long time, they just recently switched to Word Press and I have continued to comment, when it works right. My comments have never needed to moderated, believe me, there are some real troll working this site. The site is our CBS Local/WCCO News, I have tried contacting them without any success, so I have no idea who the administrator might be or what their policies are. Emails to CBS in New York from one guy in Minneapolis really don’t get any attention.

The site gives me the option of signing in with Face Book, but when I try that, hitting the “post comment” button sends me to you for an error message…

The site has been odd ever since they made the change to Word Press, besides all the little cliches along the way, your initial commenter sign-up process allowed one of the sites worst regular trolls to use my name to sign up and now he goes on the site, using my name, to make ridiculous and sometimes offensive comments. How do I address that issue?

So, it’s nothing I’m doing wrong, I have no idea if it’s something CBS or the local news station is doing, that leaves you. My guess is that I’m not the only one having problems either because there seems to a real reduction in participation on the site, there used to be many more comments for almost every story, this can’t be good for the site or for Word Press.

My comments have never needed to moderated

It’s not necessarily a reflection upon your comments. The site administrators might not know how to change the settings which are causing comments to be held for moderation.

The site gives me the option of signing in with Face Book, but when I try that, hitting the “post comment” button sends me to you for an error message…

What does the error message say?

your initial commenter sign-up process allowed one of the sites worst regular trolls to use my name to sign up and now he goes on the site, using my name

I’ve flagged the topic for WordPress.com staff attention.

    Correction:

If your comments are being held for moderation, the site administrators might not know how to change the settings which are producing that result.

  • @residentresources, can you send a link to the affected site? We’ll take a look.

  • Also:

The site gives me the option of signing in with Face Book, but when I try that, hitting the “post comment” button sends me to you for an error message…

Can you copy and paste the error here?

    First the error message;

Error: please fill the required fields (name, email).

Now the website and the exact story I’m trying to comment on. You’ll see I posted earlier as “dan w” and I’m just trying to respond to a response… You’ll also see a post from the guy I mentioned earlier that stole my name to use…. “Dan Mack”

  • Okay, that doesn’t feel like an error message. But if you were replying to yourself under a different persona, that can be seen as “sockpuppet” comments, and may well have been removed by moderators. This isn’t a technical error.

I would encourage you to post your commentary on your own site instead where, as long as it’s within our terms of service, it will be moderated only by you.
