can't publish or edit post

  • Unknown's avatar

I managed to get one post made and published using the ‘Start Here’ button on my blank new blog. The screen it took me too was largely gray, black, and white, with a dark sidebar on the right that held the ‘Publish’ button. That worked fine for me.

When I try to make a new post, or to edit the first post (there’s a word I should have made italic and forgot to), I get a simpler-looking screen which is almost entirely blue and white, with buttons for ‘Preview’ ‘Save’ or ‘Publish’ at the bottom (or, if I’m trying to edit, there’s a red trashcan icon and ‘delete’ option).

In this screen, I’m able to enter (or alter, if editing) the text of my post. When I hit ‘Publish’, a narrow green status bar moves across the top of my screen from left to right, very slowly. When it gets to within about 2mm of the right side of my screen, it hangs there, and nothing happens, even when I leave it for ~15 minutes. If I hit ‘Preview’, I get the waves of blue dots as it processes, except it, too, appears to continue indefinitely, never getting to the point of actually showing my preview.

I logged out and in again. I closed firefox and restarted. I have no idea what the problem is, or whether there’s a way to just use that monochrome screen I got for the first post, instead of the blue and white one I’ve gotten ever since.

    Please help!

I should add, yes, my ‘status’ is set to ‘publish immediately’, so it isn’t holding up on that.

Have you Confirmed your account via email?

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you, yes. Twice, now! I got the message that now I could post to the blog. Is there some way it could have not ‘taken’ and I should do it differently anyway?

Update: If I go to ‘Dashboard’, there’s a list on the right in the main box that reads ‘Some Helpful Resources’. Under that is a link for ‘write a post’. If I use that, I successfully post. I can also use a link through Dashboard to edit.

I still don’t know why the other links aren’t working, especially since that editor seems to be the one WordPress is pushing as easier to use.

So I still have questions. I do have a solution that allows me to post to my new blog and edit my posts. Since the way that doesn’t work for me seems to be being billed as New And Improved, I worry that the way that is working for me will stop being supported.

So although I can publish posts, now, and I am happy about that, I would still be grateful for any problem-solving people have to offer. Why doesn’t the new editor work for me? I’m on a Mac, I’m using Firefox, it thinks I’m ugly…?

  • Several things on WordPress.com were broken for a bit this evening, which affected the editor. Based on the time of your post here in the forums, I don’t think the initial problem you reported is related to the brokenness I’m referring to, but I’m not totally sure.

Could you please try again and let us know whether it’s working for you now?

I had hopes! But no. I just tried just now, and still no luck with the mostly-blue/simpler editor. Same thing: green status bar gets to exactly the same place and then just hangs there indefinitely.

  • I’m sorry it’s not working for you, but I’m glad you still have hope :)

Can you check to see if there are any JavaScript errors on the page? http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/advanced-browser-troubleshooting/#javascript-errors

Cool. This may be frustrating, but at least it’s educational!

I got one error, which popped up right away when I hit ‘publish’. I waited while the green status bar progressed, and waited for a while after it hung, but no additional errors showed up.

This doesn’t seem to have a way of inserting screenshots, so I’ll just c&p:

    [23:48:10.181] NS_ERROR_CANNOT_CONVERT_DATA: Component returned failure code: 0x80460001 (NS_ERROR_CANNOT_CONVERT_DATA) [nsIDOMFormData.append] @ https://public-api.wordpress.com/wp-admin/rest-proxy/#https://wordpress.com:124

  • Well – that’s certainly an odd bug :)

Do you have another web browser (like Chrome) you can try?

I’m not sure what’s causing that error; I’ll pass it along to someone I think might know better.

I must have Safari somewhere. I’ll try that tomorrow when I get a chance. Thank you for all your efforts!

  • Thank you for your patience :)

  • 0neart, it appears that you may be using a very outdated version of Firefox. Could you follow the steps outlined below to update to the latest version?

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version

Once you have the latest version, make another attempt to publish your post and be sure to let us know if you’re encountering any issues.

Hm. When I follow the instructions on that site, I get the message that my Firefox is up to date. That may be in error, however, because I think it’s been a while since I updated. I’m a little concerned about downloading and installing a fresh copy because my Mac is not young, but I do have backups, so… More news shortly! I hope.

Yeah, like I thought, I can’t upgrade Firefox any further until/unless I upgrade my OS, which I can do, but only by one more step, it looks like, so I’d be able to to get Firefox for OSX 10.6, but not any higher. I’m not sure it makes a whole lot of sense to spend the money, when it’s clear I’m going to have to replace my computer at some point.

So…thank you! I’ll assume that that was the problem. It makes sense. If I do the upgrades, then once I have everything installed I’ll try the editor again.

For right now, going through the Dashboard and using what I presume is the older editor /is/ working for me, and at the moment that’s a better solution than buying and installing Snow Leopard and then installing a new (and yet still old!) version of Firefox, and then trying again with the newer editor. Can you tell me, before we close this out, whether that option is likely to go away? Is WordPresss transitioning to using the newer editor exclusively?

  • I don’t believe that option will go away.

  • Unknown's avatar

I can confirm the option won’t go away, as long as you continue to access it directly. We may change some of the links to go to the new editor however.

An alternative suggestion to upgrading your OS & browser would be to try a different browser such as Google Chrome. Have you tried that?
