Every time I try to purchase Custom Design from the multitude of link options (dashboard, Custom Design Preview, WordPress.com store), I get routed to the Plans page. I am unable to purchase Custom Design for any blog that I create, although the option is still live.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

For new accounts that do not have existing individual upgrades being renewed, going forward from September 1st, 2014, most individual upgrades, except for guided transfers, premium themes, domain mapping and site redirects are now bundled into Premium and Business single plans that users can pay for annually.

I have seen people just recently purchase Custom Design for their sites and are using it for blogs created after September 1.

Moreover, the store still lists Custom Design as an individual upgrade for $30.

Exactly where did you see that happening? Post the link please.

I’m asking for the link because I have read everything Staff have said about this recent change including the email we Volunteers were sent.

P.S. The support doc has yet to be updated. I’m not asking for that link.

I am asking for a link to proof of purchase of an individual custom design upgrade being purchased after September 1st, 2014 for a blog that did not have that upgrade previously.

Here’s a screenshot. You will notice that the 1 year renewal date is one year from today because Custom Design was just purchased today:

Thanks but why are you posting here if you already accomplished this please? I’m asking because I am confused. Is that screenshot one of a different blog?

Yes, it’s a different blog. As I said, some people have been able to purchase it. Some people have not. I am being prevented from purchasing for new blogs that I am creating for different accounts. I also have colleagues that need to use it and are being prevented.

I am posting because these purchases are not being consistently processed or documented. I have accomplished nothing if I cannot purchase Custom Design for other accounts.

Thanks for the clarity. I tagged this thread for a Staff resp0onse right here in this forum thread so we Volunteers also have the clarity we require to answer questions correctly. Please subscribe to it as I have done so you are notified when they respond.

Can you link me the exact sites you’re having trouble with?

    Yes.

Here is one blog that I have opened on another account that will not let me purchase Custom Design:

Shawna, could you clarify the current policy about Custom Design? As I said, I, and other colleagues, have recently purchased it for new, individual blogs. Other accounts from myself and colleagues get routed to the Plans page.

New accounts after I think Sept 1, 2014 get the new Cable TV bundle Up-sell pricing, you need to buy a $ 99.-/ yr bundle and can’t buy the $30.-/yr individual upgrade – new policy and you need to buy stuff you can’t use (10 gb space upgrade for instance on a new blog with no pictures on it yet) –

I and several others argued against this new policy and lost – the pricing used to be quite fair – only buy what you needed when you needed it – – if you can use all the parts of the bundle you do save money – it you only want Custom Design the new policy triples your cost – not a good deal at all – many people are now skipping upgrades or looking at other platforms

    Sorry

This means that this policy is being inconsistently applied. This is bait and switch because the custom design plug-in is being offered for $30 in a variety of places.

Older accounts are Grandfathered into the older pricing – sort of a standard thing in many agreements – they had the domain mapping ($13.-) as an only be bought with the $99.- bundle and the outrage was very high and people left – – if the cost for existing domain mapping went up 7x – the outrage on the internet would damage WordPress.COM a lot – but by sneaking the new policy in for new accounts the bet is that new accounts will not organize and fight the pricing with loud Facebook and Twitter campaigns –

See here please for what Staff clarified for me https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/cant-find-30-font-upgrade-offered?replies=13#post-2089861

    @rmomizo

Domain registration and mapping are the only individual upgrades available to new users. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/domain-mapping-upgrade-8?replies=31#post-2068837

Themes will be available as they always have.

Site Redirect (and Guided Transfer) are available individually. However, they currently require staff assistance to purchase. In the near future, staff assistance will not be required. But for now, just point anyone looking for those two upgrades to a staff member. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/domain-mapping-upgrade-8/page/2?replies=34#post-2075142

the custom design plug-in is being offered for $30 in a variety of places.

Running WordPress.com plugins requires paying for a web host, and often storage space and additional bandwidth too. Hosting at WordPress.COM is free of charge so let’s not forget that.

It looks like timethief has covered everything I would have in clarifying our new store policies. Do you have any more questions about this?

I’m not forgetting anything. Keep in mind that I am trying to give wordpress money for the service they seem to still be selling. I’m not complaining about free services being offered.

If WordPress.com is not selling Custom Design as a $30 add on, then remove the documentation that continues to offer this option. The overhead for providing free sites and selling something that isn’t for sale is not related.
