  • Unknown's avatar

    Why I can’t achieve this ?
I’m allowing all the cookies …

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello @koolinus! Can you give us the custom domain where you are trying to add Likes?

Just to clarify, are you trying to add the Like button to the site or click the Like button?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ciao !

I want to give my like om other author’s blogs …

It happens on wp.com based blogs and on some Jetpack powered ones. Like luca.blog, or livia.blog or https://chiaramagnani.com earlier today

  • @koolinus I can see you were able to like Luca’s latest post. Did you still need help with this?

Or, if you had to do something odd to work around it, can you let us know what you did?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve changed browser … but basically I’d like a reference in the “like documentation page” on how cookies should be set to permit this.

Given the cookie law / anti-cookie for ads tracking frenzy that now we live in I think it should be useful to explain this point.

  • Hi there,

Can you please let me know more on what’s happening when you’re using Safari to like a post? Is the Like button not shown? Is it un-clickable?

Also, I suggest doing the following in Safari:

    * Clear the cache and cookies:

    Solve Common Browser Issues

    * Check that JavaScript is enabled and supported:

    http://enable-javascript.com/

    * Disable any ad-blocking and security extensions that you might have installed

    * Check that you’re using the latest version of your browser:

    http://www.whatbrowser.org/

If this still doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

Usually when I click on the “like” button I see for a fraction of a second the pop-up window where I’d should insert my WP.com credentials and then the page reloads and nothing happens.

  • koolinus – does this behavior persist in a different internet browser?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes! The only place without issues is Chrome – which is my least used browser and with the default settings for cookies and content blockers…

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello there … updated Safari up to release 12, Ghostery extension has been removed, cleaned all the cookies and still have problems.
The latest is putting a like on: https://toddsattersten.com/2018/09/17/books-can-change-form/

  • Do you allow third party cookies? We have a test here:

    The test says yes …

Sorry … I checked on Firefox (which gives me issues too). On Safari 12 the tool says they are blocked but the “Block cookies” is not set up … And the page refers to Safari 5 (and since yesterday we’re on to Safari 12).

What are enabled are two other options:

    1. Prevent monitoring between websites
    2. Ask the websites not to keep track of my activities

[those are not the exact voices but a translation of my italian interface]

  • What are enabled are two other options:

    1. Prevent monitoring between websites
    2. Ask the websites not to keep track of my activities

This is likely what’s causing this. Even with cookies enabled, that new prevent monitoring between sites (Prevent cross-site tracking in the English version) setting in Safari 12 will block us from tracking your login to WordPress.com sites on custom domains, and Jetpack sites. In other words, the browser is preventing us from detecting that you are logged in on those sites.

Firefox Quantum introduced a similar tracking blocking feature when it came out, which is probably why you’re having problems there as well.

And neither those browsers allow you to set exceptions for specific websites for that setting, so you’ll need to allow that type of tracking in order for Likes to also work.

  • Correction – that setting itself is not new in Safari 12, but it appears that there has been some changes in how it works with the latest update.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, I can confirm that de-selecting the

    1. Prevent monitoring between websites

function in Safari 12 the like button works charmfully everywhere. Since there’s no option for me to set-up exception I’ll re-enable it and take the extra-load to open a new less secure browser to “like” other people posts.

But, asking to developers, there’s no way to make us user to be ‘private’ on our browsing while making all those fancy feature work in a way different than today’s way?

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for confirming.

But, asking to developers, there’s no way to make us user to be ‘private’ on our browsing while making all those fancy feature work in a way different than today’s way?

In order for likes to work you need to be logged in, and this is blocking us from detecting you are logged in. All services that use a system where a single login is used for multiple sites will be affected by this, not just WordPress.com. And similar blocking is also coming to the Firefox and Chrome browsers. Unless the companies behind those browsers decide to allow users to set an exception for certain websites, or allow services like us to apply for exemption from this tracking blocking, this will likely become the new normal on the web as I understand it.

Our developers are already looking into ways to handle this, but we don’t control what the companies developing the browsers do, and ultimately we’ll need to adapt to whatever changes they introduce. For now, there is no way around this issue.

    Thanks for confirming.

It’s the minumum I could do!
One of the things I “hate” the most is when people asks, find a solution but keep that for themselves.

As for the second part of your reply @kokkleh … I fully understand. I’ll see what happens but since security/privacy means uncomfort I am keen to ‘suffer’ !

  • since security/privacy means uncomfort I am keen to ‘suffer’

We’re entering a new age on the web :)

    Thanks for understanding.
