Can't register new blog with wordpress.com domain

  I cannot register a new blog with a .wordpress.com domain. I am using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and have tried it with a variety of browsers. I also got a friend to try it from a windows PC and that did not work either.

  Could you please walk me through the steps you’re taking? Do you see any error messages?

  Sorry – should have been more specific. The lookup to check if the domain is free does not complete. It stays with the “checking” icon indefinitely. If I select a paid domain it goes green to tell me that the domain is available.
