Can't remove the footer in the theme

  • Unknown's avatar

Now I understand it has to be there for free versions, but I have an upgraded wordpress site and I am more than willing to pay for a new theme but I dont feel like paying for one unless I know the footer can be removed.
Is there a concrete answer to this (I have searched for one and not found it)

Removal of the top Admin bar and/or footer credit links is a Terms of Service violation that results in blog suspension and there is no upgrade that changes that.

    Terms of Service:

    11. Attribution. Automattic reserves the right to display attribution links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com,’ theme author, and font attribution in your blog footer or toolbar. Footer credits and the WordPress.com toolbar may not be altered or removed regardless of upgrades purchased. http://en.wordpress.com/tos/

May I remove the Admin Bar, credit links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com’, theme, font, or toolbar links?

All WordPress.com bloggers are required to maintain the Admin Bar (the dark bar that appears at the top of WordPress.com sites when logged in) as well as credit links, even our VIP bloggers. Please do not hide or alter text or links for the footer credits or the toolbar. Modifying the style of the footer text (i.e. colors and font size) is fine as long as it’s still readable. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

Though removing footer credit links, which leads to the untrue assumption that you designed the theme, and that you are hosting your site yourself is not allowed under the Terms of Service, it’s possible to add your own text to the footer area using CSS, if you have purchased the Business bundle http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/ or Premium bundle http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/ of upgrades as they contain the Custom Design upgrade. Then you can include styling credit if you have done any unique styling and/or you can include a copyright notice.

You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard, cancel an upgrades, claim a refund for any qualified upgrades, and disable auto-renew.

WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers. The refund period for Domain Registrations and Renewals is 48 hours.

Note: It takes from 1 – 2 weeks for the refund to be received.

Provided you are logged in under the same username account that purchased the upgrade, and you are within the allowed time frame for refunds, you can cancel and request a refund from your dashboard > Store > My Upgrades. You can also disable auto-renew there. http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#canceling-upgrades

If you purchased your domain through wordpress.COM know that canceling it provides no guarantee that you will be able to register it again. Therefore what’s best is to keep the domain URL. That is why

Yes I’ve read that and again that’s a shame as it makes the page sort of invalid and there are cheaper and better options available.

Luckily I can block the payment with my bank and force it back it seems so thats good.

Frankly, I think the theme designer and the web host deserve footer credit links. In fact, I find the practice of footer credit link rermoval and the pretense that one created the theme and is hosting the site when neither is true, to be a sleazy and utterly distasteful practice.

@ohyrans – the site linked to you name has no content – but if it had real content that you spend hours or even days writing and posting – – how would you feel if someone copied all your content – stripped all your credits and posted it on the internet? Or even if they posted it with credit – but still a copy and past thing –

How would you take the stealing of your content?? Be happy?

Also I don’t think many people read the footer anyway

Ok calm down – I thought that buying a theme would remove the need to mention the theme name in the footer (like most similar paid creative work) and assumed that removing the wordpress mention would be left out when I paid for a pro account.

My assumptions was wrong. Thats ok. I fixed it, refunded and didn’t have to block the payment with the bank so thats ok. No need for you to get salty and personal… this is just a case of me not grasping what was required on my end.
I have my own blog that I needed to wake up and thought that this would be the correct method but it didn’t fit my needs – I honestly don’t know why two people get so offended by this that they need to personally attack me, call me names and make up things I’ve said.

(theft is when you take something without someones conscent btw usually not when buying and paying for a service – HAD I on the other hand tried to remove it, knowing it was not allowed THAT had been immoral. In this case it was an honest mistake and aside from you two and your personal attack everything is hunky dorey)

  • Unknown's avatar

sorry but it was not a personal attack – just ask a simple question that you decided to rant on –

everything has a terms or service – you are upset that a theme designer and host want credit for the work they are doing for you – to me removing the credits is theft – not also that many themes on WordPress.ORG installs have Terms of service that require the footer credits to be intact

  • Unknown's avatar

I fixed it, refunded and didn’t have to block the payment with the bank so thats ok.

That’s good to know and best wishes with your new site.
