Can't rename media upload (PDF) without upgrading to business?
-
Just sent this to support, but in case forum users can answer sooner….
I need help uploading a corrected PDF but keeping the same name of the original file (now since deleted) and its URL, which I sent to a lot of people. I can’t do plug-ins, since I’m .com, not .org, but am not sure I can upgrade to Business. Too bad there’s not a free trial, or even a one-month option!
Original file (with the link sent to others) is https://abramkj.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/four-gospels-in-a-year.pdf
I thought that if I deleted it and re-uploaded a corrected version, it wouldn’t add a number at the end. I was wrong!
Now the updated version is here:
https://abramkj.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/four-gospels-in-a-year2.pdfBut the link folks have is the first one. I wish I could either rename the second, uploaded PDF to the first name, or redirect.
In the meantime, I have deleted the original file, but folks can still access it. Any idea how long this will last?
Am I just stuck here without plug-ins?

Hi –
It’s not possible to rename or redirect files on WordPress.com. Where on the site are you using this file?

I had this issue as well in uploading a pdf and I have the Personal plan. I too would like to know if there is a work around for this since my pdf’s will be rather large files. The one I recently uploaded was 185mb’s.

Hi, Liz–How about something like a one-week free trial or temporary execution for those of us paying already, so that we can do this when needed?
Or for me, I’d like to be able to do it this once. :)
I uploaded the PDF via the media files, and then took the link and sent it in a stand-alone email to a bunch of people.
The conundrum I’m in now is that I thought if I erased the first file, it would disappear and the second file could take the first file’s new name. But it would not.
At this point, the first file (with a single error) still works (i.e., the url goes to the PDF, even though I trashed it)… so as long as that happens, I’m just as happy.

Hi –
I tested this on a business plan and it is not possible to rename the files. If it were, I’d be happy to give you the upgrade but it’s not going to accomplish what you want.

Hey all, I hope you don’t mind me adding something here.
If you are going to be revising your PDF files, it might be better to upload them to an online storage service like box, dropbox and the like, and then link to them instead. That way the file will be updated, but the link itself remains the same. This also has the benefit of keeping your PDF file out of search engine caches, which can be an issue for some.
Hope that helps somewhat.

Hi, Liz–I’ve seen a number of online tutorials (from other users) that mention plug-ins in the business plan that allow renaming files. Is this not right?
Jennifer, thank you–I’ll have to do that from now on. Too bad it’s not possible with even a basic paid plan on WordPress.

Thanks justjennifer, that is a great tip.
abramkj – Yes, you could use a plugin I suppose. The issue is that when the site moves on to the business plan the hardware changes a bit to allow for the plugins and other features. Then, if you want to cancel the plan we’d move it back and the files won’t work. The best solution is a hosting site with FTP access for this.

Okay, fair enough. Maybe for future consideration, WP could make this task possible for those who pay anything (and for a domain name)? I.e., not just business plan with plug-ins?
