Can't scale images anymore, and captions are stripped
-
For years, we were able to load photos that were wider than our canvas size (745px) and simply scale the down in WordPress so that a viewer could click them and see it at their original (larger) size. As of a month or so ago, we can no longer do that. When we scale an image down to 745 in WordPress, add the caption, and preview the post, the image appears at its original, huge size (overlapping the sidebar) and the caption is gone. As a temporary fix, we’re now uploading images at 745, and that works but doesn’t satisfy the desire to offer the images at a larger size upon clicking. Does anyone know what the issue might be?

Hi Kristina,
Would you be able to set up either a draft or private post that shows the issue you described? When you’ve set up the draft or private post, let me know its title and I’ll then be able to view it in our system. I’ll take a deeper look from there.
Thanks!

Hi. Thanks so much for your response. I’ve created a draft called “Liv Von Hoene photographs Iris Apfel.” The image I uploaded is 1000px wide, and I tried adding a caption and scaling it to 745px, but when I previewed the post, the image is displaying at full width and the caption is gone. Very grateful for any help or advice you can give.

Hi Kristina,
Thank you so much for creating the draft post! I was able to see the problem and replicated it on my own test site.
Can you take a look at my steps to replicate and let me know if they are the same as your steps? Mine are as follows:
- Navigate to our older interface, the one with wp-admin in the URL.
- Head to the Posts section on the left and either edit an existing post or create a new one.
- Click on the Add Media button.
- Upload a large image (1000px in width or larger) from your computer and Insert into post.
- Click on the image within the post editor and then select the pencil icon to edit it.
- Enter a caption and make sure the Full Width option has been selected from the size dropdown menu.
- Next, click on Edit Original to scale the image to a 745px width. Update the image’s settings from here.
When I saved and viewed the post after the above steps, the image was at its full width (not 745px) and didn’t have a caption.
I was able to resolve the problem by going back to the editor, clicking on the image a second time to edit, and then re-entering the caption/re-saving the image.
As a workaround, while we look deeper into the core issue, can you try editing your images a second time?
Let me know how that goes. Thanks!

Hi there. Thank you for confirming the problem. At least I know it’s not something we’re doing or not doing! I think for me, since I’m posting multiple images at least five times a week, the easiest solution is to upload images that are 745px or less. But I am looking forward to you guys finding a proper solution because we really want people to be able to click on our images and see them larger. It’s very disappointing that that capability has vanished.
Thanks again.

Hi Kristina,
I’m afraid that I can’t make any promises on a fix for this one as the glitch only occurs in our older interface, which we no longer actively develop. In addition, going back to edit the image a second time resolve the issue.
I’ve created a screencast to show this workaround in action for you:
From the screencast: You can see that the image is incorrectly sized the first time that I save it but, after I’ve gone back to edit it a second time, it displays as expected.
It’s unlikely that our developers will prioritise a fix for our older interface when there’s a relatively straightforward workaround.
My best suggestion is to use the workaround or try out our newer post editor.
