appearence, cant see the background image
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Look at the light gray area displayed here http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/ That is the background. Go to > Appearance > Background and remove the color and then the image will display only around the edges. It will not display under the text in posts and pages.

This is the link detailed theme support page that clearly lay out exactly how the theme is designed http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/
Add a featured image to your home page
Featured image width is 624 (height is flexible)—these images are displayed on displayed on “standard” posts; posts without a specific format such as image, aside, link, or quote.
The suggested header image dimensions are 960 by 250 (width, height). However, both are flexible so you can upload a smaller cropped image if you wish. The width is limited to 2000.You cannot have an image behind the text in post or pages without purchasing an annually renewable $99 per year Premium upgrade and doing CSS editing. Are you clear on that?
