Can't select custom color in posts anymore

  • Unknown's avatar

    I paid for the upgrade for the year a few months ago and at first I was able to select custom colours and edit the CSS of my posts but now I can’t. Instead of the CSS tab, the text tab appeared again, and the colours that I can use are the limited ones from the drop down list as before the upgrade. I can still enter the CSS of the theme (I found instructions online how to get rid of the right hand side widgets in the oxygen theme). I am so confused. Please help. I really need to set custom colours.

    Hi there, I checked your account and you have the WordPress.com Premium upgrade, which includes Custom Design and I see custom CSS in your site right now.

    In the post and page editor, there is the Visual tab and the Text tab (known a couple years ago as the HTML tab). If you know CSS and HTML, you can enter HTML there, and use inline CSS to style content of a post or page. A CSS tab has never been a part of the post and page editor.

    To edit CSS, you go to Appearance > Customize > CSS, or you can go to Appearance > Custom Design. Both will get you to the Customizer.

    You can still change text colors in the page and post editor on the lower toolbar in the editor. If that second row of icons does not show, click on the second icon from the right end (Toolbar Toggle) to reveal the second row of Visual editor tools.

    At Appearance > Customize, you can also change selected fonts and colors. For colors, you can choose from color palettes (predefined sets of colors and you can selectively choose your own colors for a number of page elements as well. How many depends on the theme. Some themes have more color options than others.

    Just for reference, here are three links to the support documents on Custom Colors, Custom Fonts and Custom CSS

    Hi thesacredpath,
    Thanks for your quick reply. The issue I’m having is with the:

    “…predefined sets of colors and you can selectively choose your own colors for a number of page elements as well. How many depends on the theme. Some themes have more color options than others.”

    I used to be able to select my own colours in the Oxygen theme, for the sub-headings of my posts. Now this option has disappeared. There are only pre-defined options, as was the case before the update. I don’t understand why the option to select my own colours have disappeared.

    Thanks in advance for your help.

    I’m a little confused here. Are you talking about working in the post and page editor itself, or are you talking about working in the Customizer at Appearance > Customize > Colors?

    When you say “sub headings” are you talking about within the post content itself, or are you talking about the post titles?

    If you are talking about the headings within posts, the color selector is still there in the Visual editor on the lower row of tools (4th from the left). If you do not see the lower row of tools, you can activate it by clicking the last icon on the right end of the top row (toolbar toggle).

    I used to be able to select my own colours in the Oxygen theme, for the sub-headings of my posts. Now this option has disappeared. There are only pre-defined options, as was the case before the update. I don’t understand why the option to select my own colours have disappeared.

    Only the site title was editable before, not the sub-headings.

    The older color setting was removed because there were some conflicts between the new colors tools in Appearance > Customize > Colors and the site heading color selector you remember from before. A decision was made to let the newer color tool take over the old setting to avoid the bugs and conflicts it was causing for some sites.

    However, even though that exact same setting from before still isn’t there, you can still make fine-grained changes like it using the CSS Editor, and we can help you with that part if needed.

    Here is the CSS code that duplicates the color setting from the past that you are probably thinking of:

    .site-title a {
    	color: #f00;
    }

    Or to change the color of sub-headings, such as post and page titles, to black:

    .entry-title a,
    body.page .type-page .entry-title,
    .not-found .entry-title,
    .page-title {
    	color: #000;
    }
