Can't select desired parent page easily

First – I know about custom menus; I want my pages in a particular hierarchy so that it is possible to navigate through URL editing.

The problem is that once I have a fairly extensive hierarchy, when I try to select a parent page, it only displays pages that are connected to root. Furthermore, when I look at existing pages, the parent page dropdown becomes empty. This would be a minor annoyance, but when I update the page, it assumes that I want to change the parent to the root (i.e. no parent), thus breaking the hierarchy.

Now, because all pages connected to root are viewable, I can indeed do a workaround, by first moving all parents to root, then refolding. E.g. say I have

    site.wordpress.com/a/b/c/d/e/f/g

If I want to change page g, it would unroot itself:

    site.wordpress.com/a/b/c/d/e/f/
    site.wordpress.com/g/

with no way to make f g’s parent. I can make a g’s parent but that’s not what I want.

I would first have to move all parents to root:

    site.wordpress.com/a/
    site.wordpress.com/b/
    site.wordpress.com/c/
    site.wordpress.com/d/
    site.wordpress.com/e/
    site.wordpress.com/f/
    site.wordpress.com/g/

then move all folders back in reverse order, starting with f being g’s parent, then e being f’s parent, and so on.

This is extremely laborious and I want to know if this is a bug or if there is a much better workaround.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Not sure what you mean by this.

…but when I update the page, it assumes that I want to change the parent to the root (i.e. no parent), thus breaking the hierarchy.

If I want to change page g, it would unroot itself:

I haven’t encountered this issue, if I understand you correctly. What sort of change to page are you referring to?

I use page hierarchies extensively, as my primary site is about 98% pages. Have encountered the problem of breaking the hierarchy, but invariably this occurs when I inadvertently delete a parent, thus sending all of its children to “no parent” status. That doesn’t seem to be the effect you are referring to.

If you change (edit the content, edit the URL, etc.) a page in the last generation of children, what’s to prevent you from keeping or making the parent a member of the previous generation, thereby assuming its proper place in the hierarchy?

    I meant,
letting it assume its proper place in the hierarchy.”

I didn’t delete the parent. Here is what it looks like on my side:

I see what you mean. You’re using the new (My Sites) page editor. I never use that. The new editor only displays 5 of my 796 pages as options in the parent page module. Obviously I can’t use that.

Ah, I see, so it’s a bug on the new interface then :P

Yep, see it on the old editor, thanks for helping!
